    turbonator setting base timing

I am having a problem setting my base timing with the turbonator cal for a 2.5. When I pull the coolant temp sensor the fan comes on but the engine starts running extremely rich and rougn. The timing mark is in the window but is jumping all over. I ended up setting it by ear for now just to get the engine running and the cooling system bled. The cal does run rich at idle with the sensor connected it is running about 11.0 on my wideband. When I pull the sensor wire the black smoke starts pouring out the exhaust.

Has anyone ever experienced this problem?

    Thanks,

    Justin

Which version are you running? I have no problems at all with TLM.

Keep running the cal longer, it will clean up with time, at first it runs rich, but eventually the o2 sensor learns what to do and it will run great, ive check my timing with a earlier version with no problems not the newest one

So this is a problem with the newest one? Otherwise the only problem I have is it has a very occassional miss which seems to be getting better.

I will try an older version and set my timing.

You will have to drive it more or rev it up with the sensor disconnected until it smooths out. Is it hot when your doing it?

    Re: turbonator setting base timing

It will not run when I disconnect it. If I try to rev it a little when I disconnect it it will try try to run but go real rich. If I pull the wire and not rev it just stalls like I turned the key off. The funny thing is when I pull it and try to keep it running the timing light acts like it is missing ( the flashing is not consistent. I didn't have a chance to try it with my latest cal.

Yes I did this with the engine at normal temp

    Re: turbonator setting base timing

That probably means the fuel WOT table and maybe pumping efficiency are tuned too rich. When the CTS is disconnected the engine goes into a limp in mode and I think it goes off the tables and does not use the adaptive data that has been stored while it monitored the O2 sensor. The reason it would run with the sensor plugged in is it was working to lean out the mixture.

I had this problem with the Turbonator LM ver9 and fixed it by pulling a lot of fuel from the Part throttle, WOT, and pumping efficiency tables. Now when I disconnect the CTS the engine keeps running.
