Angry timing belt walking on cam gear.

I just did a complete rebuild on my 85 shelby charger with quite a few mods. When I fired her up the timing belt immediately walked to the back of the cam gear, and i mean 1/4 of the belt hanging off the gear! So bad that it rubs the water pump bolts. Are all 2.2 belt tensioners the same? Is there supposed to be a spacer between the tensioner and the block? My car is at my folks house 3 hours away so i dont get much time to mess with it. I have rebuilt 2.5's and 2.2's before and never had this problem. I am sure I will figure it out, just curious if anyone has come across this before.

Are you running all square tooth gears?

If yes, then the belt is too loose. Proper tension is set by just being able to twish the front of the belt 90 deg, IE the longest part.

The tensioners between common block and non common block are different. Make sure you're using the correct onefor the correct block. One sits the belt out further away from the block.

If it's riding in toward the VC then it is most likely too loose. You should be able to turn the belt a quarter twist without too much difficulty on the front side.

you need to clean the block and sand a bit where the tensionner is bolted , see that many times
