    1984 Dodge 600 ES Turbo Convertible - $4,900

It took some thinking but I've decided I'm going to get rid of my Dodge and upgrade to something newer. My plan is to sell my 600 ES for around 5,000 dollars (which is actually less than what has been put into it) and buy a mint condition 2,000-3,000 dollar 1990s Lebaorn convertible to replace it (which are generally cheaper to buy becuase they are much more common and have a much less "classic" status), making some money and in the process also getting me something more modern, comfortable and refined.

$4,900 may seem like a bit much at first but you have to consider that this is the most limited production and arguably the most desireable K-car convertible ever, with a total of just 1,768 built. Also considering the incredible condition the car is in and the fact that it has merely 21,000 miles on it I've found some sources that place the value at nearly 6,000 dollars, so it's not really a bad deal at all.

I am located here in Lansing, Michigan if anyone in the area is interested in purchasing the vehicle. As I said before the car has incredibly low miles (21,000) and is in near-mint condition, it is a very rare and sporty classic ride that's really fun to own and turns lots of heads.

Here are some pictures for anyone who hasn't already seen it:

If you find a mint condition 90s lebaron convertible turbo for $2000 locally and you pass - let me know. There is a 1989 in Milford for $11,000...

    Re: 1984 Dodge 600 ES Turbo Convertible - $4,900

$11,000 dollars is absolute highway robbery. There is no way any 1987-95 Lebaron regardless of condition or milage should be above about 4,000 bucks, they are simply to common and not paticularly "special" as is my 600, unless there is a very rare trim level or special edition that I am not aware of.

There are two in my area that I know of for sale at the moment, both appear to be in very good condition. The first one is a 1988 model with the 2.2 liter turbo and 72,000 miles... the second is a 1992 3.0 V6 with 103,000 miles. The '88 is stickered at $3250 and the '92 was just brought down in price from $2,900 to $1,900 by a dealer who is desperate to offload convertibles before the summer's out. For 1,900 it's a complete steal, I'm going to take a look at it this evening and possibly purchase it. I am a bit weary of the 2.2 Turbo in the other one now that I've had experience with that engine in my Dodge.... I'd rather have the Mitsu 3.0 and that one is a lot cheaper anyway.

    Re: 1984 Dodge 600 ES Turbo Convertible - $4,900

Well I went to see the '92 Lebaron, it looked incredible cosmetically but the engine was a different story unfortunately. It burned quite a bit of oil (lots of blue smoke) and the steering was quite sluggish and had some play in it. I'm going to check out the '88 Turbo one tomorrow, hopefully with less miles and a higher price tag it won't be quite as crappy mechanically. Plus I think the 2.2 Turbo is less likely to burn oil than the 3.0 mitsu engine, from what I've seen.

There's also a nice looking ealry-90s Pontiac Sunbird 3.1 liter V6 convertible I'm going to check out. Yeah I know it's definitely not the most well-built or reliable automobile out there but I figure there's no harm in at least taking it for a spin, maybe I'll really like it who knows.

FYI, I do not hate Turbos I just don't appriciate having to get a new headgasket installed every 20,000 miles... other than that not terrible engines and definitely good performers.

Hey Taxi, do you know what a Chrysler TC by Maserati is? Kinda sounds like what you are searching for, you can even get the uninspiring 3.0 V6 if you get a 91...

Chrysler TC's are very rare to find, let alone for sale. Plus I imagine that they would cost much more than a Lebaron as well. I much prefer the look of the Lebaron too, I always found the whole concept of the TC quite silly... it is if someone took a Lebaron and played a joke by putting a Maserti badge on the trunk.

    taxiguy,
Please don't come to our turbo mopar forum and start hating on turbo cars. We happen to like TC's, turbo engines and lots of other "silly" things. Fix what you have and enjoy it, or buy a Camry like everyone else.

Ummm... how am I hating Turbo cars at all? I already said I don't hate them... I don't know where you are getting this from. I didn't say I didn't like TC's they are just kinda pointless is all with the so-similar Lebaron.

    Re: 1984 Dodge 600 ES Turbo Convertible - $4,900

Ok, I guess I'm overreacting a bit. The problem is you don't know the history behind the TC. It was supposed to be released before the 87 J body Lebaron, but due to many issues with production it wasn't released until 89. Imagine how sweet the TC would have looked in 86 compared to the K Lebaron vert. Now, about the 20K mile headgasket remark, that's not really a common problem with most Chrysler turbo cars, but the 84-85 cars did suffer more due to their 10mm headbolts, and some poor head castings. On most higher mileage cars those problem heads were long ago replaced with better units. A common upgrade is enlarging the headbolt threads to accept the later 11mm headbolts. A Mopar performance headgasket will also help keep things sealed up for longer than 20K miles. Sorry if I seem sensitive, I'm just tired of all the misconceptions about these cars. I would also like to apologize for highjacking your for sale thread. A word of advice about your car, your probably not going to sell an 84 turbo on this site for your asking price. This group is notoriously cheap, and most are leary of 84's since they have a one year only electronics setup that has no aftermarket support. You will probably have better luck with Autotrader.com or Ebay. Personally I would keep your 600, it's in great shape, and nice low mileage cars are hard to find now.

I've owned four TC's so I know what I am saying when I say they are NOT LeBarons. It is a completly different car, unique in too many ways to go into here. If you're not into them fine but don't make a judgement based on ignorance. Do even a teeny bit of internet searching, you will find that with 7300+ TC's made from 89-91 there are PLENTY for sale in your price range. Or you can go with that Sunfire you mentioned, it's still a free country until BHO changes that too.

    Re: 1984 Dodge 600 ES Turbo Convertible - $4,900

Yes I listed it in other places too of course, I didn't think I'd have much luck here but I figured there was no harm in trying at least.

I may end up keeping it I'm not sure at the moment.... it seems I can't really find a suitable replacement for it, I went to the dealer that had the Turbo '88 Lebaron but it looked like it had been sold, which is a big disapointment.

About the TC, I just think Chrysler could have done a better job distinguishing it from the Lebaorn... just look at the interior, almost all the visible components are straight from the Chrysler parts bin, it has the same window swithces as a Plymouth Voayger yet it is trying to pass for a Maserati. It even shares it's interior door handle with my Dodge for goodness sakes. Not to mention it shares exterior doors (and the same basic shape) with the half-the-price Lebaron. That's no way to appoint a 35,000 dollar "Italian" sports coupe. I always saw the whole concept as a hastily done competitor to the Cadillac Allante, though I can't find any information stating whether GM or Chrysler came up with the idea of an expensive Italian-built coupe/convertible first, maybe you know. Bottom line is it is not a bad Chrysler but certainly no Maserati. Having siad that I certainly don't dislike the car I think it's a very unique and somewhat desireable automobile, but if I were a new car buyer looking for a convertible back in 1990 I sure as heck would not pay 35,000 bucks for the TC when I could get nearly two very similar looking Lebaorns for the same price. Now that they are both nearly 20 years old however, the prices are much closer and the TC would be a unique car to have if one came along for a good price, but there are none in my area to be seen, let alone for sale. In fact the last one I saw was about 2 months ago, and I haven't seen one since. Plus I'm looking for something preferably under 3500 or so and I think that a good TC would cost more than that due to it's rarity and limited production.

Again, you are only guessing without spending 6 minutes looking. There are dozens more, but I'm only willing to give 6 minutes to show you these.

Check my location... do I live anywhere near Seattle, Atalnta, or San Diego? I don't think you could have found ones any further away! It's funny, that last one looks an awful lot like a Toyota Cressia!

Thanks anyway for looking though, but sadly they are just not that common over here in Michigan
