    Power Steering

Ok, So ever since the engine was rebuilt, i've had an issue with the power steering fluid leaking out.

When i took apart the head this spring, i replaced the high pressure hose, the return line, and the pump (w/ resivior).

Seems now i still have the leak, except its faster than it was before!

    any ideas?

The brand new belt is also squeaking at start up, but i'm thinking it might just be a little loose or tight, have to get under there tomorrow.

just really sick of my engine bay being filthy thanks to the entire thing being covered in power steering fluid, and then getting dirt and grease caked on...

I'd be willing to bet the o-rings got nicked on the pressure line. I had to do the job twice on my GLHS to get it to seal. Hate to say it, but you'll probably have to pull the hose off again and change the o-rings. Use a small amount of fluid to lube them up before you put it back together.

Re: Power Steering leak me too!

so it was leaking where exactly?
Mine squeaks at at startup and seems to be leaking from the pump itself....

I haven't been able to locate it exactly yet.

Though everything from the pump down is soaked, so i'm guessing somewhere along the pump.

    Re: Power Steering

Shaft bushing is probably worn. Caused from too tight of belt tension. This will then cause the shaft seal to leak. Rebuilding the pump requires a pulley puller, bushing removal tool and small press to get wire snap ring back in place. If you have these tools, it's a breeze to rebuild, if not buy a rebuilt with the pulley already installed. Kits are around $15 from Rock Auto or your local parts store.

power steering problems like that are the reason I replace the entire system at the first opportunity. Those lines are a PITA with the drivetrain installed.

Try using some thread sealer on the studs that go into the pump. Do you know for sure it's power steering fluid? I believe at least 1 of the mounting studs goes into the pump and can let it seep out.

    Good luck, Chris

Was going to be my first try, seems to come out where lower bolt goes into housing on pulley side..

    Re: Power Steering

Check the tightness of the belt for the scqeek....mine did that when i was at full left or right cause the belt was slipping on the pulley on the ps pump. When i had the pump out i cleaned the entire thing out, power washed it down, got all the power steering fluid out of it. i put fresh new fluid in and it hasn't sqeeked to this day since the rebuild...I also had a leak before, i found out i had that metal/rubber washer on the wrong side of the hose connector..

    Good luck

    Tom
