    SRT4 connecting rods are weird?

Hey, I just bought a set of used set of pistons and rods. Whats up with the rod caps on these things? They dont have a clean, machined surface on these things. It looks like the rod caps were layed on the edge of a bench and karate chopped......the edges are all jagged. Ive never seen this before. Whats the deal?

That's the "cracked cap" design that is quite common on Chrysler engines for a couple years now.

cost some, but a better design too. This is a quote from a Ford engineer (Ford uses this design too)
"The rough irregular mating surface that forms when the bearing cap is physically fractured from the rod virtually eliminates cap shift."

The reason for this design is to use the cap to locate itself on the rod instead of using the bolt as the locator and the clamp. It helps reduce the stress put on the rod bolt from cap shift as stated above.

"The SRT-4's engine management actually adjusts for hot weather by increasing boost until it's making the same power it would in cold weather, so there should still be no difference"

    that makes me laugh

the cracked cap does locate the rod cap perfectly but if you somehow trash a rod bearing and beat the large end out of round, its done. you cant rebuild them.

thats no biggie to you i assume cause you can just run T2 rods with a thicker bushing to accept the SRT pin.

I think a whole new piston and rod from Mopar is like 50 bucks.

Ask who? The 75 dollar price is as cheap as I could find them new on the web. If you go directly to the dealer, they list for over 100 now.

I am sorry, I thought you were pricing from your local dealer. You may want to call up your local dealer to see what they can get you one for, tell them the price you are seeing on the net. Well, if you are really looking for one.

WHAT? I am dyslexic and that doesn't even make sense to me. Are you trying to say we should ask the pimp for a discount?

Simply looking at this guy will yield a discount at the dealer.

I work at a dealer and my cost after taxes would be $73.91 for a SRT-4 piston/rod assembly.
