Look at the size of that cam gear, they musta been running a larger crank sprocket.

one of the bigger driving schools, Skip Barber or Bob Bondurant used to run a 2.2 open wheel car for their school, sorry I can't find any info on it, I do remember talking to the chassis builder about it.
might be a VW/porsche deal. you can get adapters from kennedy engineered products for all kinds of engines including our 2.2L's and 2.4L's and stuff to bolt to the porsche/vw style trans. http://www.kennedyeng.com/vw_por.htm

Yeah I guess you're right, it is bigger. Looks like they were running some sort of coil pack or magneto setup, so maybe they used a larger crank gear for use w/ a crank trigger or something. The valve cover looks to be modified too, looks weird near the cam gear, but it clearly has the throttle cable notch in the back end though.
