Also, if you have changed knock sensors on your car and the new one has a different response curve, using the VW knock sensor to compare audible knock with knock seen by the computer allows you to tune your knock threshold in the cal. This combined with datalogging and a CEL flash with knock allows you to verify that the cal is pulling timing when actual knock occurs, and isn't pulling timing when no knock is happening.

You are running an 8 valve with stock electronics, the knock sensors don't work properly with hybrids or 16 valve swaps and as DJ mentioned, he's running MS with no knock sensor.

Have there been any improvements in knock circuits for MS? I know audible knock is very effective when you know what you are listening for but probably not useful at the track unless you are logging audio (which shouldn't be that hard). My problem with audio recording is how are you going to compare that to RPMs? I guess it would be nice to at least log voltage to see if you can compare it to the audio.

    Re: 93 2.4l DOHC Shadow

It seemed to me like they were getting a bit better knock results with MS3. I haven't looked too hard into it again so I'm not totally sure. As for tuning with the audio I would do a pull with my finger on the laptop mouse button with the cursor hovering over the end log button. As soon as I would hear something I would left click and stop the log. Add a bit of delay for reaction time and you have the general area of the map to investigate. I used to where the headphones under my helmet when racing and just get out of it if I heard something concerning but after a bunch of passes with nothing I stopped doing it. Instead I now read plugs at the track and run a fresh set each race that I do tuning on.

    Re: 93 2.4l DOHC Shadow

I wonder if there is a safer way to pull off that audio recording. Do you even log knock voltage? I have always been frustrated with MS's lack of emphasis on knock and other basic functions (like using a speed sensor for ...a bunch of things) while spending a lot of development effort on some things that seem to be "scholarly playing with yourself."

Are you doing anything for idle speed control?

Also, are you using the 8:1 pistons or the 8.8:1?

I use an idle srew. It's set to 1100ish and then I use a bit of a timing ramp on the low RPM to catch the quick off the throttle dips.

I'm using 8.8:1 pistons because I made a mistake cc'ing the chambers and the dish I thought I needed was the same as the Wiseco 8.8s. I took a bit out of the chambers to get it down to the 8.5 I originally wanted but for the next head I will probably leave it at 8.8.

A guy at work who is a genius with bending tubing helped me bend up some 3/8" stainless hard lines to go from the engine back to the tank. All right, he didn't really help me as much as he did it for me. Sometimes it's nice having someone who can do the job the first try and in about a tenth the time . I can say I bent the fuel pump lines though. Mating up to a 255 lph Walbro, I made those 3/8" as well since it seemed pointless to me not to. The hard lines worked great and only cost me $40 instead of a couple hundred to run braided. With a bit on minor tweeking on the car they fit like a glove and should last forever. All the ends are 37deg JIC so they will fit with all the automotive AN fittings.

Rumor has it that welding stuff gets hot. Not quite sure what else I could have done about this but luckily they didn't short out.

For the wiring I started with the factory harness and removed essentially everything except the lighting and the few other wires that still applied. I'm excited to make up a clean harness with minimal branches. I always hated how ugly the factory one was. I also think this one is my biggest weight saving mod. The pile of left over wire is crazy, albeit I will be adding the megasquirt wires in but there won't be near that many.

Here's the factory harness before I started.

they sella product called heat paste or thermotrap that is a paste you put on stuff to keep cool like ball valves and stuff when brazing or soldering

    Such a sad sad truth.

The car is in a pretty sad state waiting for me to get on it. I no longer have a header, intake, ECU, wiring, intercooler, tranny, coil overs, or fancy control arms that some guy was making. What I do have is a computer full of 3D models so I'm trying my best to keyboard my way into the 9s.

    ahhhh engineers at their finest.

take apart a working {anything} to make it better and end up with a complicated mess.

good thing you have the hands on skills to possibly bring it to fruition. most dont.

    Truth has been spoken.

I have some big plans and should be able to start soon. (Famous last words) I'll document it all as usual but probably start a new thread because it goes way beyond a small change to the current platform.
