    Angry Turbo smoking, grrrrrrrrr!!!

I just rebuilt my Turbonetic large shaft turbo, got a new OE kit, everything was in good shape, no scoring, pitting etc. Got it all back together and it was fine for 50 km's, then almost at the track, it started to smoke out the tailpipe at the traffic lights the whumf, the road disapearred. I drained my catch can, empty so thats not it. I didn't get to race so I watched, left 4 hours later and it wasn't that bad, but still smoked worse at idle and after aprox 15mins of driving, backed into my driveway and the driveway disapeared,

What is going on? could it be I have too much blowby and the turbo can't drain? I noticed oil spitting out of the drainback tube when I was moving it around with no turbo and have another post about that???????

Sucks, thrashed all week so I could get it running today and this happens, and the track was slow so could have got like 10 runs in,

Get a clean oil drain hose put in and see if the oil is being drain fast enough. If not, that would be the or part of your oil smoking problem.

    Simon,

Remove the oil filler cap while the engine is running. If smoke is coming out like a choo choo train you have blow by. Another way to check pressure in the crankcase is to connect a boost gauge to the oil dipstick.

Blow by does not prevent the oil from draining back into the oil pan. It pressurizes the bearing housing and the air looking to escape forces oil through the turbo seals into the exhaust and turbine housings. A restricted oil drainback tube would prevent oil from draining back and oil would get into the housing via oil pressure rather then gas (blow-by) pressure.

    Re: Turbo smoking, grrrrrrrrr!!!

Well, took it out today and tore it apart, its f*cked. The turbine side had massive up and down play and had to use a hammer to drive it out of the housing. Looks like the turbine seal welded itself to the housing????

So the turbine wheel and turbo housing are scrap.

Unless I can find another turbo cheap, I am out for the year,
