Re: how tight of a convertor to run

I've read that the Neon torque converter will stall like a 2.2/2.5 turbo converter and offer a lockup. Just make sure the lockup clutch is not engaged under high load situations, as it will not be able to take the beating.

Im of the school of thought of staying as tight as you can while maintaining decent spoolup.

On a 2.5 right? A stock converter should be fine for you then.

Re: how tight of a convertor to run

Why are you looking to get a lower stall than stock?

Re: how tight of a convertor to run

stock will only stall to 3500 if you brake boost. flash stall is much lower.

The neon converter is perfect if you just want stock driveability + lockup. The tbi converter will be fine if you want lower stall + lockup.

The tbi converter should be ok but spoolup would be noticeably slower than a stock converter and stock turbine housing.

Im actually planning on running a tbi converter in my executive sedan but that will have a 2.5 and mitsu.

Re: how tight of a convertor to run

what i want to do is knock off some highway rpm with the .91s im at 3100ish i figure with a lockup installed it should bring me down to 2800 which ill be happy with BUT If i buy say a 3200 rpm with a lockup then that means i have it locked at 2800 or what ??? whats a neon convertor rated at rpmwise

Lockup means lockup.... you will have no converter slippage no matter what the stall speed of the converter.

Exactly-when its locked, its locked, no slip, nothing. Stall speed doesn't doesn't really affect cruise rpm unless its really loose or badly built.

Not on a stock setup but when you get into changing the stall speed on a non lockup converter you have to think about cruise rpm being lower than your stall speed or youll have driveability issues and create a lot of heat.

Yup, that's right. The lockup cluch locks the converter, so the input shaft of the trans will be spinning at the same rpm as the engine crankshaft.
