    Rare 525 straight cut gears

Messing with Reeves in another thread
Figured I'd post these pics so everyone can see
There's actually a complete 525 assembled with straight cut gears
a custom chromoly bearing plate w/ pre-load screws
    (2) extra input shafts
and 2+ more sets of different gear ratios
definetly a good N/A or Rally setup
no overdrive here, 1:1 5th gear
    enjoy!!!

What's the advantage of the straight cut and is this for an auto only? I have no idea about gearing in transmissions.

Re: Rare 525 straight cut gears

The A-525 is a manual trans
All L-bodies and pre-86 other bodies as well as some 1st gen vans

helical cut gears (normal trans) try to deflect under heavy load
the gears literally try to walk up each other as they mess causing them push each other apart, which can kill the bearings or crack the case in a severe application
also as the gears walk father up the teeth of the gear, they mesh at a thinner part of the gear which will snap and shear all the teeth off said gears

this won't happen with a straight cut gear
straight gears are noiser, some argue that a helical cut gear is slightly stronger due to the constant mesh and more surface contact area between the gears, but if whatever is holding the gears together begins to deflect your in trouble

+1 myself and my dad were talking about how it was too bad they didn't make straight cut gears just a couple weeks ago.
