Re: Restoring/Converting 1987 Daytona Pacifica to 90 Shelby Clone

Been working on a Shelby clone conversion myself: 87 Pacifica to 89 Shelby. Mine looked just like yours same color and all. Good look on the paint. Just take your time and it should look good. I paid 4k for my paint job and it looks like crap. I wished I would have done it myself but as I've got 4 years in this resto I just wanted it done already!

Any way, good luck on your project. Keep at it, it'll be well worth it when its done. These are very sharp cars IMHO.

I will NEVER do this paint method ever again. I sprayed a car with rustoleum. So much orange peel. Took hrs and hrs to wet sand it out and the best part is while wet sanding out the orange peel I broke through on just about every line and corner. Looks great wet sanded and buffed for about 2 weeks then it starts to fade. You have to re-buff it about every 3 months and guess what, your gonna end up burning through the paint at some point. I guess its cool if you want your car to be 1 fresh color and are on a college budget but Im telling you I learned my lesson. Never again!

I should have the rest of the pics up late tonight. I have the exterior complete and have to finish the interior tonight and it should be road ready. I am going to wait until next spring to do the final wet sand and buff. Good chance it will get a couple rock chips this winter that will need to be fixed anyway. There are a couple small runs and one sag at the top of the ps B-pillar, otherwise it looks every bit as good as any factory paint job you'll ever see.

I've actually had a set from that guy in florida since I started the project, but I will wait until next spring to put them on. Guess I'll have the "murdered out" look for the winter. I got the 90 shelby daytona set minus the lower stripes. The decals are sort of a dark grey so they should be nice and understated.

I am going to wait on the Eagle F1's until I redo the pumpers this winter. They don't work in the snow anyway. I think I"ll go with that set of wheels/tires from that guy off that Z24 Cavalier for the winter. I'll post pics up when I get them.

Well, its all together! ... but it won't start. Its probably a wire disconnected or something from painting the engine compartment. Last night at 1:30AM I decided to go to bed instead of figure it out, its raining today anyway.

Here are the rest of the pictures:

    Taped off for paint:

    Painted:

(later figured out that bumper was on upside down)

Rest of the parts hung up ready for paint:

Ready to go on the car:

    And here it is!

Close-ups of paint result after spraying without any wetsanding or buffing:

Looks pretty good for a garage job. The car has truly come a long ways since you first got it. It's pretty hard to tell that it's not an 89-91 Shelby now.

You're not lying. 5 months and the guy has it fully painted and converted. Will you come to my house to paint my IROC R/T? I have a 20' x 25' bay where you can paint it.

Yeah they turned out nice, but it took a lot or repair work to get that lower front piece fixed. I should have taken a picture of the backside of it before I put it on. The seatbelt parts were just what I needed, too

I finally got her back on the road! I turns out it was the ignition switch on the steering column I swapped in that was bad. its always the last thing you check. I"m loving that short throw shifter, I would recomend it to anyone, especially on the extra tall shifters like mine was.
