    Weird Howling Noise

My shelby charger is making a weird howling noise at idle, the engine is all rebuilt, new alt, new water pump, new power steering pump, etc Pretty much new everything.

Here is a quick vid of the sound:You can really hear it around 30 seconds in.

Anyone have any ideas on what it is? Im thinking maybe oil pump shaft gear bearing?

Your timing belt is too tight. Correct tension is when you can just twist it 90 deg at the front-IE the longest part.

I have some non a/c alt brackets if you need one?

WOW, i thought that sound was familar! one wouldn't think it's the t-belt!

as a matter of fact i busted my cam 2 or 3 months ago because the timing belt was too tight!! watch out for this mistake, it destroyed my cam and also the first cam cap - worst case being you might need to find a replacement head...

You can also toast main bearings if it is too tight.

Good thing to know!, I'll loosen the tension this weekend then. Would it be worth it to buy the timing belt tool from napa, etc?

Good call Simon Ya and don't worry his method works fine. I've got ~2k miles on my new build no problems with it jumping teeth or anything yet. These suckers apparently like to be pretty loose compared to what you might think. Goodluck

    Re: Weird Howling Noise

another method that works every time for me....
i busted 2 cams because of too tight belt.
    with timing belt tensioner loose:
turn crank bolt with right hand wrench til cam barely starts to turn, then (while maintaining tension on motor w/right hand), with left hand set tensioner to simply remove slack from backside. Dont go tighter than that... I turn the motor by hand a couple turns after setting to make sure the belt never gets sloppy. Readjust if it does.
Watch out for that howling noise, it is a special frequency used for summoning a tow truck.
