Talking I am going to rollerize my A413.

Turbocolt2.4 said he's done it already and does it to other RWD race trans so with my trans being down, might as well do it. I have access to a machine shop so he'll do what I want. I'll post pics as I get it done,

My copper thrust/shims are pretty thrashed so its time to upgrade, should relieve the metal my magnet keeps collecting.

Need to figure out what to do with the planetary's too,

Thanks, got most of the bugs worked out, now just to make it a bit more reliable, although this one has lasted about 3 years,

Are you talking about using torringtons in place of the shims?

Yes, I just mocked it up, shouldn't be that hard, I can rollerize the whole back section quite easily.

That sounds cool to me. Might even lower the fluid temp a little along with making it more reliable.

The transmission uses copper/babbit shims/thrust washers to seperate the numerous planetary's drums etc. For stock, they work, when making power, these are pressed together much harder and wear, some will grind into the mating housing causing sloppy parts, accelerated wear and metal in your oil. Using roller versions eliminates wear and friction,

Won't be many part numbers, its mostly machining and measuring.

I took some pics of the stock stuff so it will make sense. I'll post up on Monday, my work computer crashed.

Re: I am going to rollerize my A413.

Ok pics to make it easier. You can see in the rear sun gear how much pressure is back there, that groove isn't machined, thats from the force pushing the copper into the metal. Thats the main one I rollerized already, actually TCS sell's those but I don't like how they machine the pocket.

This is the rear output shaft sun gear and matching worn thrust washer-

This is the machined one for the torrington thrust bearing-

The front planetary and thrust. These are a 5 pinion unit, an upgrade by Dodge. The rear is a 4 and that's what failed on mine and a few customers regular Neons-the thrust washers to keep the gears from moving blow out, . Looking into making a straight cut version but costly, around $300+.

You can see how hot it got when the TC failed, that colouring shouldn't be there, thats the fluid burnt onto the metal, a few plastic items in the trans melted,

It's pretty much like I imagined, but the pics are worth the proverbial 1000 words.

Simon what about cutting the welds on the rear planetary and replacing the thrust washer with torrington thrust bearing , then weld it back up .
You will need a make a jig to weld it back up square.

My machine shop buddy is looking to it but it will be costly.

We talked last night, he can make me a brand new one with straight cut gears and rebuildable but the cost, ouch.

He is looking at options today. The rear planetary always fails, it has the most load as it takes the most abuse, EDIT They fail just as much as the front one, which is what failed on mine, my bad.

He makes torque wrenches and impact guns with planetary gearsets of similiar size that have 1000's of ft/lbs of torque and they don't fail, so he's going to do some analysis on mine.

Re: I am going to rollerize my A413.

Take your right foot out of the equation and it would live longer!!!
It may be costly, but it would last. Might be worth it in the long run.(refering to the planetary set)
