    SBEC Chip Converter

I thought I should create a thread with a better title for this to get an idea of how much interest there is.

I've built a converter board for the SBEC which allows those with the SBEC to run the same chips the SMEC does. The general advantage of this is that you no longer need to have/use a UV eraser because you can run the electronic erase EPROM's (AT29C256, 27SF512, etc). This should also allow for the use of an Ostrich with the SBEC (Will be testing the board with the Ostrich asap, but there is no reason it shouldn't work). The cost should be around $35 depending on the number of them people buy.

    Thanks

    Re: SBEC Chip Converter

It will work with any SBEC that uses the 28 pin M87C257 chip.

That said I took a look at the schematic for the 32 pin chip used in the updated SBEC II and I'm pretty sure I could make a seperate unit for those as well if there is enough interest. It would probably cost about the same depending on parts. If you or others are really interested in an 32 pin SBEC II version and are willing to test, PM me.

FWIW, I've seen SBEC-II's with both the 32-pin Hitachi chip and the 28-pin 87C257. I'm not sure they were the same board underneath, but I assumed they were. So, my assumption would be that your board will work with SBEC-I and -II.

You found a datasheet for the Hitachi 32-pin chip? Mind sharing?

    Hitachi? I thought it was a 28F256.

That said, you would know better than I would. If anyone has a socketed SBEC II and wants to test with this version let me know.

    Re: SBEC Chip Converter

The T3 SBEC-II uses a Hitachi HN-blahblahblah 32-pin chip. All I could find out about it is that it is a flash chip. I assume it also has built-in address latch (since it seems to be somewhat compatible with the 87C257). But, I could never find a datasheet for it...

Don't suppose you have the full chip name? The closest Hitachi chip I can seem to find is a HN58C1001, but that isn't pin compatable with the 87C257.

I keep comming up with a Toshiba chip TC97208AP as the chip in the 32 pin SBECII's.

I was told by Moates that it will not directly work with a SBEC because the 87C257 chip the SBEC uses had an internal latch the Ostrich does not emulate. That is one of the main reasons I started this project. I suppose you could give it a shot and see what happens.

    Re: SBEC Chip Converter

I just built one of these years ago. It's the octal latch circuit so the emulator could be used. A *very* good friend told me over the phone how to do it. It could be made compact enough to fit right over the chip area, but I found this to work just fine. The 32 pin EEprom is a Toshiba TC97208P btw...

    I made the same mistake...
then broke a pin off in the socket....
Then had to send for another cable

There's not much love for the SBEC's

Me thinks we should update the KC

    Re: SBEC Chip Converter

I sent the final test board and my Ostrich out to my tester yesterday, so as soon as I get an "I works with the Ostrich" answer from him I'll order all the parts and start the group buy.
