What are the differences between the 86 and 87 GLHS heads.

Are there any distinct differences between the two heads (aside from the casting stamp) My dad is under the impression that the 87's had a few more coolant passages or something

Also... would all heads from an 86 or 87 2.2 or 2.5 (if they made the 2.5's those years?) be the same, or were there differences between turbo heads and non-turbo heads? I'm pretty sure they are both G heads with the 782 cast stamp near furthest right cylinder.

    Thanks in advanced!

The '87 T2 heads would be cross drilled for better block cooling. No problems at all mixing cross drilled heads with non-cross drilled blocks and vice versa.

the GLHS heads should be the same, only the REAL T2 engines got cross drilling in 87

any 86 or 87 head will work as long as its turbo, N/A heads have different valves

Thanks! I figured they were cross drilled, but don't have an 86 head off a car to really be able to compare them. I do have an 87 head to compare to when I get the time to take the 86S' head off.

Where the valves themselves different (I think they were for sure) or the size of them? If the sizes werer the same, would a aftermarket head which I'll post pics of up later, work as long as the proper valves get put into it (and cam/lifters/all the other guts)?

Re: What are the differences between the 86 and 87 GLHS heads.

Other than the manufacturing date stamp the 86 and 87 GLHS heads should be identical. Both are the 782 Swirl casting.

These heads are not crossdrilled as the GLHS engines were based off the TI.

The Turbo heads have different valves and springs than a TBI head, and they were also had a tapered shroud around the exhaust valve in teh combustion chamber, typically there is a "TS" stamp on the side of the head that identifies this.

Don't forget some heads ran a slider cam, some didn't so Dodge didn't machine the squirters into the caps. If running a roller, it doesn't matter.

If you run the MP gasket ending in 005, you don't need the cross drilled head.
