    Unhappy Escort won't shut off.

    Hi folks,

My '95 Escort Wagon is possessed, it won't shut off, turn it off, take key out, still running!

So had to pull engine fuse, which stopped it, but still had power to ignition I think (but turned off interior accessories) so had to pull battery.

Ignition switch was new 3 months of use ago, put it in about a month before I blew the HG and didn't get round to fixing it for 2 years, now been driving it for 2 months.

Any ideas for which specific parts of a Honda to sacrifice in the exorcism ritual?

I mean, what crap to look at?

    thanks,

    RW222

was the switch replaced or the cylinder? could be either or. My buddy had a riviera (same one i cut the roof off of i mentioned in another thread) and I just took all the tumblers out of the cylinder and you could start it with a butter knife. To turn it off you had to push a rod down in the steering column (which had no shrouds). Not like anyone is going to try to steal it.

It was the cylinder seized before and I think I had to buy a unit complete with switch, so both were new. I'm going to have to mount an expedition into the junk pile in the garage tomorrow to see if I've still got the old unit.

I had a similar issue with my Fjord work van. It turned out to be a broken plastic slider that went from the lock cyl to the switch.

    Re: Escort won't shut off.

I've got that stomach flu thing so didn't get much done yet, either puke or crap every time I do much bending about. But anyway, managed to find the old parts, so have a spare switch that seems good. Frigging annoying part to get to, have to remove steering wheel, half drop steering column, pull multifunction switch etc etc. Been poring over wiring diagrams and can't see what else it can be unless it's a short somewhere. Two really annoying things about the Ford FSM I've got, one, the professional test procedures say "if it makes contact it's good" ... orly??? and two, the wiring diagrams are laid out on a per system basis meaning there's not one that gives you all the frigging connections to one component, it's on one diagram for the starting system, one diagram for the engine, one diagram for the accessory power so it's hard to figure exactly what all the particular wires are connected to, and where things are spliced into it.

Anyway, hoping tomorrow I can bend down under the column and not lose my lunch...

    Re: Escort won't shut off.

    Looks like I got it...

Didn't feel like taking the steering wheel etc off so I used a cheat code.... ^ ^ > > V V < < blue red start... or translated into english, use a screwdriver bit held in pliers to get at the screw holding the switch to the cylinder, then a jewelers screwdriver to pry the clips holding the contacts of the key reminder switch into the housing and slide them out, ditto to the spare switch, then slide them back in to the switch you're putting in... this saves an hour or so of screwing around with the steering wheel and airbags and clockspring and multifunction switches etc. JUST to get at the back screw that's holding the reminder switch to the cylinder....

Didn't post mortem the old switch yet to see what it did. It was a Standard motor parts unit, made in Taiwan.
