    differential shims

Where are you guys finding differential shims? I'm reinstalling the diff in a 568after replacing the bearings and need to come up with a couple of shims to set the preload. Local dealer says they can not get the shims any longer.

    Any suggestions?

I got my last ones from the dealer... a good trans shop should have them.

Is there anything special about them or could they just be machined out of mild steel? I would think it would be fine since they are being backed my aluminum which is softer. I don't see any reason they would have to be hardened or anything.

Last time I needed them I went to the delear and they told me the same thing then they found a box with transmission shims for who knows what models. There was an inch of dust on them but they worked.

You should still be able to get them throught the dealership... the parts guy was probably being lazy and not looking too hard. I bought a bunch of different size input shaft and diff shims when i was rebuilding my A555. I used to have the printout of all the available sizes with part #'s, but i can't find it anymore.

Pat, what are the inside and outside diameters? I have some old Dana 60 shims - somewhere........ was a whole package of different thicknesses and I only used two.
    Might match up.

If anyone has the dimensions you might be able to cross them to something Ratech makes. Here is a link to their spec chart.

I found the Sonnax 10 shim pack on www.transmissionpartsusa.com. Once it gets here and I verify it will work out, I'll post back up.

Now you just need a car to put a hybrid in. Or are you yanking that auto out of the omni?

My hybrid is ready to go back together. Got everyting swapped on the input shaft. So I guess I will be checking these shims out pretty soon

    Re: differential shims

There are 3 differnt shims to set preload. Are we talking about the differntial bearing shims?

Also, the differntial bearing that list for the 413 would they be same as 520/555?
    thanks

Differential shims...as the thread is titled. :-)

I believe the bearing is the same, the Timken Set 11. Double check me on that though.
