NON TD Fault Code - 98 Jeep Cherokee Sport

GF's '98 Jeep Cherokee Sport threw the following codes:

    PO700: Transmission Control System Malfunction
    PO705: Transmission Range Sensor Circuit

I know nothing about the newer Mopars. Can anyone here provide some input.

    Thanks!

Theres a range sensor on the side of the transmission that tells the TCM what gear range the shifter is in (P, R, N, D). They tend to crap out on the Cherokee's, I think it's a dealer only part. Check the connector 1st, its next to the trans dipstick on the pass side of the engine. Be VERY patient when you go to replace the switch (if the connector is ok), the old switch is usually corroded to the selector shaft its mounted to.

Just got off the phone with a Jeep tech and he said I have to replace the entire module that goes on the side of the AW4 tranny. Parts: $359, Labor: Too much

He probably referring to the range sensor......theyre not cheap for that tranny. Labor should only be about .5 though.

If it's a AW4 take the range sensor apart and clean the harden grease of the re lube it with die electric grease use to do it all the time at the dealership will save you $500 .
ps use care when removing it from the shaft.
