88 daytona weak spark, doesn't start

It is a 2.5na tbi car. I bought it and want to try and get it to drive. It was supposed to have a bad fuel pump. I got into it and turned the key and heard the pump come on for 3 secs or so. My friend sprayed carb cleaner into it while I cranked and nothing. It sound like every once and a while it wanted to almost fire. I took the coil wire off the dist, and cranked the motor. There was a very weak, copper color, thin arc from the wire. It also doesn't seem to spark as quickly as the motor is turning. When the motor is cranking normally the spark should be zap-zap-zap-zap, but I see zap---zap----zap----zap. There does seem to be light amount of oil in the dist under the hep. Could it be a hep or bad coil. My omni coil sparked light this till I put aftermarket ignition on it, then it looked like white lightning. Any advice would be appreciated.

Could be crappy wires, weak coil, not enough voltage reaching the coil. As for it not starting, the timing belt could have jumped.

Re: 88 daytona weak spark, doesn't start

I thought of the belt, but since It has almost no spark I thought I would try the ignition route first. It has a really weak spark. I'm just wondering if the coil would be the only culprit or could the hep cause a weak/ intermittent spark problem. Since I see light oil in the dist, could it also be effecting the hep's signaling ability. any ideas or experiences would be welcome.

All you can do is make sure the coil is getting at least 12 volts when cranking, if it is, then the coil is bad, the wires are crap etc.
