03 Impala trans.

Wifes car started acting up about 2 months ago. It has been parked awaiting parts this whole time.

When driving down the road and the car shifting into OD the engine would buck really hard. Eventually it started doing it on decel through all of the gears. (Now (after the motor mounts) sometimes on takoff it is still in OD instead of downshifting) My first thought was engine mounts. I finally got the money for them and put them in tonight. Took the car back out and drove it prolly about 20 miles and it started again.

Got it home and rechecked the trans fluid and it was really thin and dark colored (smelled a little burnt too) so I drained the trans. There was a magnet inside but it didn't have a whole lot of gunk on it, just a light film.


So the question is this:
Should it be ok and it was just due for a change or is the tranny going out and the clutch packs are burnt up?

Remember, it drives fine till it warms up and the car has 1116K and some change on it with the original filter/ fluid (probably anyway)

I have seen a few 4T65s that act this way when the fluid gets dirty. Change it and the filter. Then, drain and fill the fluid again after taking it for a short drive.

As Joshua mentioned the solenoid failure is common on these transmissions.

Go to www.clubgp.com and do some research on the trans and its weaknesses. The guys running supercharged 3.8s on that forum have found the weaknesses in the 4T65.

Fluid first. The TCC issue is mostly on higher mileage or beaten on SC cars. Not saying it isn't it, but less likely.(now that I've said it, I'll be wrong)

Don't want to contradict but ... I owned an 01 Impala and had the trans flushed at 77k. After that it started slipping and in doing some research read it is not a good idea to flush these transmissions. You can probably find this info on the clubgp website I mentioned before.

TCC solenoid....thats too funny!!!! I guess the issues with the 3T40 TCC solenoids didn't teach GM anything.
I was right, as soon as I said it probably isn't it, it was.

If you were only close enough to come help me with it. I'm really dreading working on it this weekend. Wish it was an 80's fwd dodge... At least with those we can pull the trans out the side of the car without dropping a frame or an engine too.

Any tips on getting this thing out to work on it?

You don't have to pull the trans to fix it. Jack the car up and support on stands. Support the trans wit ha jack and pull the mount. Remove the subframe bolts on the drivers side and let it hang. Pull the side cover of the trans and the TCC solenoid is under there. There might be a bracket or something like that to remove before the side cover will come out, but not really bad.

Ok guys. Here it is all tore down. Please point me in the right direction, but I do believe the TCC is the sensor at the very bottom left side?

Hello Just found this forum searching,
I bet this is the group to have a PCS conversation with.
Quick and dirty - Impala 2003, 3.4, 4T65E and I'm doing struts and a Pressure Control Solenoid.

Few Questions
1)From pic above the PCS is the second one from the top right at the front correct?
2) Instead of diss assembling the knuckle and suspension components to try and drop the right
side of the motor, with the strut pulled and out of the way cant I just dis connect the (obvious stuff) and drop it the inches needed to get the cover off?

By obvious parts I mean, the steering down to the rack $ pinion, Down pipe, connectors (all of them) Intake, Possibly drain the cooling, tranny lines,

I have a link to a step by step of how to take all that apart and have the experience/tools, but I think i can skip the head ach by having the strut completely out of the way.

3) Do I need to drain the tranny? or is it clear of fluid because the body is on its side?

I'm tackling this first thing in the AM.
