    Shift cables

Does anyone have any recomendation on lubricating the cables? My one cable had the boot ripped and a little moisture must have entered because it is a little stiff. Since I am in the process of converting my one car to a stick I am wondering if anyone has ever come up with a solution to replacing shifter cables in the older cars which are no longer availiable. For a while they were availiable aftermarket, now nothing is availiable. I am curious if some type of universal cable would be able to be adapted. I used a universal shift cable on my 413 auto.

    Re: Shift cables

After doing some research I came up with the idea of buying 2 - 3/8" threaded ( both ends ) push pull cables, and 4 heim joints. The cables can be universially mounted using the 2 nuts on each end. I would then replace the nipples on the trans with the heim joints as well as the nipples on the shifter. With the cables threaded on both ends there would be plenty of room for adustment. If anythng with the heim joints the shift feel should be grately improved over stock. DSM guys seem to be using heim joints on their shifters.

Let me know what you think. Cost would be about $120 to complete the job.

I just stumbled on this company recommended in the Kimini project.

Why don't you check and see how much for new cables?

Pulling a good set out of junk yard will be your best bet money and frustration wise. I hated when my cables would lock up on my Daytona when I had it.

I took my cables out, lubed them up with marine silicone spray, then grabbed a ton of boots from other shifter cables at the J/Y, fit one on, no more problem.

    Re: Shift cables

Big question here. Are the lengths of the cables actually different?!?!?!? I measured 555 cables yesterday. One set from a Daytona for sure... and the other were supposed to be from a P body. The lengths are the same. The only thing that was different was the adjustment at the shifter area.

I'll take pics and post them up later. I just wanna find the best cables to use in a GLHT. I have a 555 and a 523 and am in the process of thinking.

    Re: Shift cables

SO, I have 2 sets of 555 cables and one set of 523 cables out and was comparing/contrasting.

The 523's I am pretty darn sure came out of a P body.
PN 4446854. length 47-48" (some adjustment) black grommet
PN 4446860. length 53" (fixed non-adjustable) gray grommet

The 555 (?possibly the 520?) cables are a PITA to handle, measure the lengths, and keep boots from tearing (nearly impossible)
    PN 4377322. length 52-53" (adj.)
    PN 4348495. length 49-50" (adj.)
___those two were taped together. _77322 had a black connector on one end

Another set of 555 or 520 (Pretty sure Daytona 555 cables)
    PN 4431341. length 54.5-55.5" (adj)
    PN 4446876. length 47.5-48.5" (adj)
___those two were taped together. all had white connections

If anyone can help in any way.. with confirming what the PN's came out of. I'd greatly appreciate it. I hope this helps not only me, but any future searches about cables. Without having a parts manual for 87,88,89,90,91,and 92... I'm kinda lost with what the cables came from.
