Unhappy a413 something snapped/broke any ideas? Van will not move

    Hey guys,

1989 voyager turbo auto. Last night at the drags I was midway through first and something snapped/broke in the transmission. The van will not move. In reverse there is no noise and no movement, in drive there is noise like someone grinding their gears while shifting and no movement. It makes the same grinding noise when rolling the van backwards, and makes minimal to no noise when pushing it forwards.

    Thanks

Yup, always check axles first. They can break without it 'looking broken' so you've got to get down there and really check.

Agreed on axles which is rare for an auto.

If you broke the output shaft, then you'd have no forward gears but reverse so that rules that out and you break that when you shift from 1-2.

Haven't been able to take it apart yet, but I pushed it into my garage today. It defiantly sounds like gears grinding and binding up when we were pushing it (in neutral). Hope its my diff and not something internal. I watched the video of the run and it snapped right as i gave it full power.

I say you blew apart on of the planetary gear sets. Once you check the axles (doubtful on an auto, especially since the van was under way) Drop the pan and if it's full of small roller bearings look for a core transmission or a replacement because the damage will be fairly extensive.

Common problem on the autos, used to see it quite a bit at the dealership, can you roll the van in either direction?

I broke an axle while underway, at the very top of 1st. Twisted the splines off inside the trans. I also thought it was the diff, until I pulled the axle out

Flex plate broke is another possibility.

Re: a413 something napped/broke any ideas? Van will not move.

Broken flex plate wouldnt make any noise pushing the van around because the trans wouldnt turn the flexplate.

I am guessing Cliff is right but i always suggest axles first because they can fail in a couple of ways and not look broken. A friend of mine had something fail inside the inner cage (splines on the shaft itself?) that resulted in the axle looking intact but the shaft would just spin in the rubber boot and not turn the inner cage.

And... no one got it. My ring gear had a bunch of teeth sheared off. So I am assuming the pinion gear will be toast as well, And there is probably no way to replace that in car. Anyone have an a413 for sale? lol.

You actually CAN replace the pinion shaft with the trans in the car, but you have to drop the valve body iirc. And you probably have to drop the k-frame to get the diff carrier out the back of the case. And you have to pull both axles anyway. So it isnt less work, it's easier to pull the whole trans for that job.

you going to need to pull it out and dissemble and inspect making sure too find all the small pieces . Autos are not the place to cut corner they will bite you in the A$$ if you do . Plus your going to have to reset all the back lashes and preload in the diff it is best to do that on the bench than in the car it can be done in frame but I don't like to do it anymore so easy to pull 3sp out

I have 3 magnets in the trans pan and an inline magnetic filter, so it will be interesting to see what they collected.

Smart man. That really helps with governor issues on these things. And of course, the occasional spectacular parts explosion!

I took the pan off and...

    pshhh normal wear and tear

    some pretty big chunks?
    http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/9770014/

    DAMN
    http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/9770015/

The piece of the case for the output shaft bearing and snap ring were hanging out on top of the valve body.
I think we tied for damage, and I only have 187 whp. Ran a 14.5 at 92 the run before though.
