Has anybody replaced a fuel pump on a 89 daytona without pulling the tank? It looks like it can be done by dropping it down some. Also, how does the fill tube come out of the tank. It almost looks like it is pressed in with that rubber seal? I'm putting in the 255 fuel pump. I think that is a better idea than adding the inline one. Just looking for ideas. Thanks
if you unbolt the top of the filler you can work it down and into the tank farter to get the space to get it out of the wheel well then just keep wiggling it and it will come out...
but bump for a good question ive been waiting to do the same to my 91 daytona ive been thinking a bout cutting an access hatch

Yep, the fill neck basically just pushes in and out. If the rubber grommet is badly cracked, I think you can still get them at the dealer.
Every time I've done a pump in a G-body, I just unbolt the fill neck (at the quarter panel), undo the tank straps, and lower the tank onto a jack until you have easy access to the pump.

Thanks another thing i noticed while peeking under there is that the ring that holds the pump in looks real rusted. I hope that it wont be a big problem. Maybe that is normal. We will find out. LOL
+1 to what Supercrackerbox does. One note though, make sure the tank has as little gas as possible.
hose the thing down with pb blaster or penetrating oil a few times before you do it let it set over night.... ya kno let it soak id actually do it for a couple days
Yes, it's quite normal for them to be rusted. I don't know if replacement ones are available or not. But like the last guy said, hose it down with PB Blaster. Same with the tank straps, you don't want to break those studs off. Put some anti-sieze on the studs before you put it back together, just in case there's a next time.

anything below the beltline and outside the weatherstripping with the exception of the engine gets anti-seize applied to it.
On the 1989 and older daytona's I have been able to pull the pump without moving the tank at all. You just have to take your time and wiggle the hell out of it.
what about the 89 and ups? lol

no but on the 1990 and up the tank changed
I can change the fuel pump in my 89 Daytona Shelby without pulling the tank or jacking up the car.
Plenty of space. Just make sure you buy NEW fuel injection hoses to replace the old one. Wouldn't be a bad idea to change the fuel filter too.

Cool I'm glad I dont have to take the tank all the way out. I will replace the filter and the hose. There cheap enough and why not.
We did my friends 88 without droping the tank. The hardest part was getting the rusty ring loose!
One more thing. When you get the sending unit almost out, get something to grab the filter on the end of the pump before it falls in the tank.
So true............I have one now on the bottom of tank now!
Ditto on the 89 pump coming off w/o any issues. But like a lot of things I learned the hard way. I pulled mine down and then off the first times I did mine and killed the straps bolts.
A heads up.........I deleted the noise suppression diaphragm on the pump and inserted a line in it's place. Mine would not hold pressure as it is not secured very well at the top. You can hear the pump at startup but other than that it is not annoying to me. Also consider doing the pump rewire mod while you are at it you will be glad you did.
