    Mexican Magnum

    Hello Folks!

Recently I been receiving a lot of PM's regarding the Mexican Magnum, so I have decided to open a post about'em....

Admins: I dont know if this is the right place for this post.

Well anyway, I will start with a litle bit of history:

The Magnum is based in the K plataform with some other goodies like recaro bucket seats, 5sp tranny, modified suspension and a bunch of decals, I guess the first K-car under the name of magnum was called Dodge 400 Magnum in the year of 1984 (late 1983)

It was a great car compared with its competitors (Citation X-11, and Nissan Sakura which was also turbocharged, needless to say FORD Topaz uke: ) so thats why it was named as car of the year by the magazine "Motor y Volante":

So it has such a great launching, the years 1984 and 1985 were more squarish, with more agressive lines.... and in the year 1986 it came more rounded (like the K-cars).

About the engines, the 84, 85, and 86 came with a 2.2L Turbo I such thru (garrett), then only in the year of 1987 it came with a garret turbo, 2 piece intake, intercooler it was a TII with turbo garrett!! but only in this year because the 88 model came with a Mitsu turbo and a 1 piece intake and I guess it was the first turbo'ed car in Mexico with the Common block!. Then it was out of the production line its successor was the Shadow GTS wich came on 89, 90, and 91.

This is the most commun engine of the magnums:

    Obviously a TI.
    And its turbo:

    This is the vaccum diagram:
    http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/1354/f0da2tq.jpg
1985ShlbyChrger : Sorry couldnt find a better one, but im still trying to get you one

Well at least this is from a Magnum 87 (Garrett TII):

Also, somebody asked me about how is the wiring setup on the dash, well.. im not really sure, but I can tell you is the dash is fully compatible with other TD's... a friend of mine moved the digital dash from a Phantom (Lebaron in the US) to its magnum and it worked fine.... also the digital Dash of the phantom 88 can fit in the Spirit R/T DOHC :
    See this post: http://dpcmx.net/portal/index.php?topic=14787.0
So this leads me to think that it has the same pin-out:

Well... theres a lot of info, you just need to ask here and I will try to answer all the questions.

Now its time to show some articles of the Magnum:

    Magnum VS VW Caribe GT

It was too fast that it was compared with a Kawasaki !

Well... Now let me add some recent pictures of our cars in recent days:

And the best thing about this one:

    hehe... yea... its a swap!
The diference between a normal K-car and a Magnum:

And in the end, my Magnum !!

Thats a lot of pics huh?

Well.. hope you find this info useful, and for those who wants to buy a Magnum I dont know if thats possible, I mean to have it legal in the US, I think the best way is buy a normal K-car in the US and then buy decals or the seats or something like that from the Magnum and then have you Magnum replica.

    Thanks
    Tony.

I don't know that I would go that far. IIRC one of the guys said that they did not get an turbo L bodys down there, nor the daytona. I think if we both got it all it would have been ideal.

    Re: Mexican Magnum

Nice write up Tony! The best thing for us Americans to do would be to buy a K-car, get the grill off a dodge 600 and install it, get the seats and badge from mexico and put in a TIII. Thanks for answering all my questions.

Ok, not all but alot, IE Phantoms, TIII's carried on for a few more years, 4 speed auto's, and a few different turbo models.

Well they are very dificult to find, since only the magnums came with those seats... and also the recaro seats was optional, so some magnums came with regular seats.

Also, another funny thing about these cars, the turbocharger was optional (im not very sure of this) because one day we found a Magnum with the 2.2L N/A engine even thought it has the TURBO badges, and according to the owner he asked to the dealership to eliminate the turbo... again im not sure of this.

So if you want a pair of those seats I can try to find a set, but I might need some time

Tony, the sticker I need a picture of is on the end of the drivers door. Has the VIN number and stuff on it. I do appreciate all the info and the writeup though. Love the articles too. I know just enough spanish to understand them.

Would it be possible to get more pics of the recaros? Also how much do they normally go for price wise?

Those magnums are awesome, I wish we had those in the US.
