That is for cracking the serial number of your van
sorry I couldn't resist, I don't even know for sure but I guess it is to be able to connect your notebook via the serial port (relict of the past) to the diagnostic port in your engine compartment to download the code that way. But it's only a guess!

do you already have 5 volenteers for the $100 a flash unit? If not I have a socketed smec ready to roll, pm if you need another person.
Thanks,

It converts the voltage levels of the SMEC to match those of an RS232 serial port (PC serial port) so that you can communicate with the SMEC thru the SCI port. You need one of these to flash the cal with D-Cal since D-Cal does not work with the USB-to-TTL converters.
Yours makes 8 by my count. I'll put everyone that wants one on a list. I'll order everything in a batch, so it really doesn't matter how many there are. Though, it may be several months before I get to #8 on the list. I'll have to cap the first batch at 10 - I don't want to over-promise what I can do in a reasonable amount of time.
Rob, email me your addy at Oakley1@ix.netcom.com
I would if I could use it.
I'm gonna have to pass. I will have my engine installed in a week or two and ill have the megasquirt in before 2 months. Thank you for providing this to the people, even though I won't be using it. If I buy another car I may be interested in one though.
So doing this would let someone use a laptop to download a new program onto the PCM to support whatever modifications they've done to the car? That sounds freaking awesome!
Yeah, you can edit your cal in D-Cal, and then send it to the SMEC/SBEC right from D-Cal thru the SCI port (diag port). The download takes about 2 minutes. Not the fastest, but it's whole lot faster than pulling the computer and swapping chips.
There's certainly the possibility of making it faster with a later generation of chips. But, for now, our editors only support flashing this type of chip.
Sigh, still waiting for boards...
Woo-hoo! I just got the e-mail that my boards have shipped! I only got 2 prototypes of the flash board. One I will use for my spare T3 SBEC, the other in a SMEC. That way I can test them both. If they both work as intended, then I'll order enough to build a batch of 10 this first time around.
Rob, shoot me a PM with your mailing addy so I can get those SMEC's out to you. Help clean up some space in my shop too
So if we provide the core and only get this, "Serial cable (SCI connector on one end and DB9/PC or Palm connector on the other) - $50", it should be 150-200 dollars for the setup and then of course you need a laptop or really conveniently located PC? If so, I may know some more people who would be interested in this as well.
