    Filters

What is the difference between and oil filter and a fuel filter? Specifically: there are inline filters advertised for either oil or fuel but they look like the exact same things....

    Re: Filters

If your talking just stock OE stuff, I would say maybe pressure ratings, paper material differences or even the glue?

Aftermarket, nothing. I am using a System 1 fuel/oil filter for a tranny filter but I do notice they can have different micron ratings.

    Re: Filters

My point is more so that fuel filters seem to be cheaper and the oil filter TU sells for their turbo kits looks like an Earl's fuel filter.

Fuel filters don't take a hit heat wise and massive temp swings-thick when cold, etc, acids, water and the list goes on. AFtermarket wise, like I said, they are generally the same but watch the micron ratings.

If it's an Earl's piece, there will be a different micron screen used for fuel or oil, fuel is generally finer than oil as these in-line filters are normally used as a strainer to protect something downstream. Say needle bearings from a lifter, etc.

    Re: Filters

I understand the micron difference just fine...

I'm looking for 100 micron for fuel (low pressure gravity feed from sump to pump) and 60 micron for oil (after cooler before turbo).

Edit: Earl's use 140 micron for oil and 85 for fuel, so I'll do 140 for oil and 100 for fuel.

That sounds right, if you buy new, there about $80+ bucks.

    Re: Filters

Well...I don't have enough room for a filter on the fuel portion...I added a surge tank and I wanted to put a filter between the tank and the rail, but there isn't enough room, so I may just have to put the filter after the pump...but there will still be a stock style filter after the in-tank 255...

I got the filter from Ebay, the fittings from the local HiPo store.

Just searched "system one or system 1" and found that unit. So far, so good.

    Re: Filters

minivan or not isn't the point...I am using two fuel pumps only because I plan on using three...one (like stock-mod, with a 255 in-tank and then a standard filter post pump) to the surge tank (.9 liters) and then two (only one for now, as one at that distance should be able to handle 500+ hp) from the tank to either end of the fuel rail with the return out the center (once again, closer to stock now, with the fuel in one side and out the other) leading back to the surge tank, and then a return from the surge tank to the tank. I am using a stock style filter in the back, but after making the tank I was afraid that there might be debris that I wasn't able to get out after welding the 3/8 fittings on, therefore worrying about the pump. I don't really have enough room between the surge tank (mounted behind the shock tower on the passenger side in the omni) and the pump (on the frame rail behind the engine) to mount an appropriate filter. That is why I am thinking of putting it after the pump instead of before and to go ahead and install the second pump after the surge tank, so if there is pump killing debris, the chances of it reducing fuel supply to an engine killing level are cut in half since it is unlikely that both pumps will fail at the same time, requiring me to install filters post pumps (or a larger rail and manifold to allow one input line requiring only one filter).

BTW: My surge tank was pressure tested at 100 psi and cleaned many times, but there is no way to guarantee that a ball (or 50) of molten metal didn't stick to the inside tube, only hard enough to pass multiple washings (considering all I have is a MIG machine).

I was thinkin the same thing. I have heard a lot of people using 2 walbro 255's but 3 pumps? personally i use one big pump on my big HP cars, but whatever 2 each their own, i just never got why people use 2 pumps for 400 hp etc just so they can use 2 walbro's to comensate lol, just use one big pump and make it work.

I am using 2 but for a valid reason, my intake 255 got weak so rather than pull the tank and do it again, I installed a Hipo unit inline, quicker and easier and takes the stress of the intank pump so that one will probably last forever,
