Overboosting a little too easily, I think

Fresh 89 2.5 T1, a520. Practically a stock rebuild with a Garrett TII, large can WG, 2.5" SV and exhaust, no cat. Somewhat free-flowing muffler in the stock location.

The problem is, I'm hitting cutout without even really trying. Only relevant fault code is 45 (overboost) Yeah... thanks.

The vac lines I can say with 99.99% certainly are not the issue as I just repaired/replaced all of them. Aside from that, what are my other suspects? WG actuator, WG solenoid and its wiring... and what else?

Well, if you cant figure out the problem, an easy fix would be to simply put a bleed on it. Cant hurt anything doing that. Usually this is a WG solenoid problem.

    Does it overboost every time?

To determine if it is the wastegate actuator hook vac line from the can directly to vac/boost source, you should only see around 5-7psi, if overboosting, you know the arm is staying closed.

Well, if I drive like a reasonable human being I'll hit cutout only when I'm accelerating hard, like up an on-ramp from a stop or something. I don't hit cutout after every traffic light, if that's what you mean.

I'll try connecting the WG actuator directly and see what I get.

If its truely overboosting, meaning its really going over 14.7 put some sort of boost controller on it. A bleed is a simple fix. Bypassing the WG solenoid, why wouldnt that help?

Because if he wants to determine what is wrong that would solve nothing if the wastegate arm is stuck closed and atleast you would know if you hooked it directly to the manifold source.

And maybe he wants to retain computer controlled boost?

Didn't get a chance to try it yet. I want to hammer out all the bugs, and I'd like to be able to keep the computer control of the boost just for safety.

And maybe you can reread my first post I said, "if you cant figure out the problem an easy fix would be to put a bleed on it." Dont all jump on the bandwagon... my lord...

If you hook it up to manifold pressure and you get around 5psi you ruled out pretty much anything turbo related. The only thing left is basically vac lines/wg solenoid.

    Hope this helps hoverfish.
