    Noisy Lifters

Have a 89 2.2 that I just did a rebuild. Head assembly had been done 6 months before so did not touch it. After reassembling the motor everything was fine. Great oil pressure. After running the car for about 50 miles we noticed a ticking noise coming from the top end (Head). There is no wear issues on cam roller rockers looked ok so figured it was a bad lifter. Local NAPA had a set of lifters so ran down, got them, installed, problem cured...... NOT. Now noise has moved from left side of head to center and sounds like multiple lifters and a lot louder. Are aftermarket lifters crap or did I overlook something.

I have heard it can take a while for the air to bleed out of them sometimes. I don't know about that long though.

    Re: Noisy Lifters

    1) Take them back out
    2) Drop them all in a can of oil
    3) pump them up by hand
    4) Put a little assembly lube on both ends
    5) Should be good to go

oil is 10w 40 Have not put a external gauge on it. Going by the cars gauge it is just below half mark. Much better pressure than before rebuild.

    Re: Noisy Lifters

It could be air, does the oil look foamy?

It can take days, weeks to bleed them, thats why I like PT lifters, they have a bleed hole.

When your car is cold the oil is thicker, which causes more windage. Try running a thinner weight oil to get rid of the noise. Or throw the stock lifters in the trash and run PTs

The info is on the boosted forum. But about $50 vs $80 for 2.2 lifters

Its supposed to be restricted. How did you determine that?

How are you determining the oil is getting dirty? colour? not a good way to tell oil condition anymore. I would get a sample analysed so you know for sure. Some oils go dark really fast, others take time but a tired engine, overfueling, short drives will break down oil faster than regular driving.

    Re: Noisy Lifters

basing low oil flow on experiance with other engines. I could be wrong. It seems that the lifter bores are getting a little oil. Guess I am use to heads slinging oil everywhere. Just seems awful dry in the top end.

Oil is turning black with less than a thousand miles. It is a synthetic I have never used. Worries me.

tick tick tick....... driving me insane.

Have you removed the valve cover and ran it? Put rags around the front and back to limit oil loss. You should see alot of oil.

    What type of synthetic?

Have we asked what your oil pressure is?

It should also be coming out of the cam journals at a pretty good rate.

You still haven't mentioned your oil pressure and don't read off the stock guage.
