My 200,000 + mile 89 GTS has a tilt wheel, and now it's getting really loose - are there any fixes for this??
I took a spare apart and it looks like there's no way to fix it.... Just replace it.
Ideas???

Is it loose where it tilts? You can apparently get down there with the appropriate sized inverted torx head socket to reach a couple of the bolts fairly easily. I had a bit of a rough go of it with that in our 600, so I just grabbed a non tilt column out of a K car with cruise and called it a day.
I've fixed the one in my Shelby Lancer before. It uses a Saginaw type column that is similar to the ones used in older GM stuff. Here is the website I used to fix mine:

You basically have to strip it down and tighten the 3 bolts that come loose. Its not fun for a 1st timer, my first column took me like 4-5 hours, and on flat rate, that cost me huge. Book time is around 2.5 hours. I know can do them in my sleep. Consider a new/used or pay someone, you'll sleep easier and your car will thank you-throwing tools at it, lol.

There is probably a shop in Cincy that does nothing else. It was 90 a couple years ago for them to do it in their shop. That's if it hasn't been loose for too long and self destructed.
ive done it in an hr and i had no idea how to unti i read a link like the one posted. you dont need an inverted torx, i did it with a 6point socket that fit it

Yea, read the link, fixed the slop - about an hour.
does the repair procedure work for the later airbag equipped columns ?
I'm asking because. the car originally didnt have a tilt adjust column, I finally swapped one out from a junkyard donor p-body
started noticing about 6-7 months ago. going over bumps the wheel will almost bounce up & down. and I can hold it at the 10 & 4 o'clock positions and slightly rock the wheel. its not a "saginaw" but an "accustar" type steering column or so I'm told I've got. never heard of them loosening up like the saginaws but I dont know ???
