    555 vs. 568 internal part questions

    I just want to double check what I seem to remember reading a long time ago.

    IIRC the input shaft from an '89 555 can be used as a replacement for the input shaft on a small spline 568...correct?

    On the same note, I remember reading that the 1st & 2nd speed gears on the cluster shaft are also interchangeable between the 2 transmissions since they both use the same multi-cone syncros...correct?

    This sounds right, but I have never seen them side by side so I wouldnt bet on it due to the different shifter mechanisms in the trans' ... anyone else know for sure?

    Also, whatcha doing? trying to make 1 good one out of 2?

    Yes Ray,the 89 555 input shaft and the 90 568 are the same.

    Yeah, what Jackson said It has to be a "Late" 555 (all of the 89's are as well as anything with an August of 88 or laterbuild date on the tag) to have the same 'nose' bearings as the 568...

    Thanks for the confirmation Jackson & Allan!

    So how about the 1st & 2nd speed gears? I'd rather just use stuff I have in boxes than try to source another 568.

    Gears will work on either regardless of early late. Something different about the synchros I'm thinking though, beena couple years since I played inside a 555/568. Personally, I like the shift quality of the 523's myself Just about to build one for the Rampage...
