How do I clean up and paint a tranny case?

OKay, I am still working on my project car. I am getting close to having a motor and tranny to bolt together, but the tranny is ugly as hell. This summer I hit it with Easy off oven cleaner. It took off a lot of crap, but it still looks pretty dirty/ugly to me. I assume I can just prime/paint it once it is clean. Any suggestions on cleaning it up more?

Castrol Supercleans, hose and brush, it will etch and remove a boatload of grease. Finish with some brake cleaner and I just use high temp engine paint.

Actually, I cleaned it with superclean before I used the easy off. I'll hit it wiht some brake cleaner then try to find the BBQ Grille paint.

If you just want aluminum or black, there's a couple of paint brands have high temp silver or high temp black on the shelf with their regular enamel gloss or rust paint line, it's usually the same price for the same size. Whereas if you look for BBQ, appliance or engine enamel, you get the same crap in a different can for $$$

I'm kinda of the same mindset. It is going to get scratched up when it's removed or installed in most cases. Nothing is worse than having a freshly painted tranny case or anything for that matter and then getting scratches all over it.

Re: How do I clean up and paint a tranny case?

Good thread, I've got a similar task coming.

I was thinking cleaning it up real good then maybe a clear paint. Seems like it may be easier to keep clean that way.

Holy Shnikes. I do remember seeing that setup and that tranny case. That is absolutely amazing.

The case looks damn good, but I don't see any info on how it got to that point.

Probably a die grinder. It takes forever but it works. Ya know with the little brown cookies.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure he used a die grinder and scotch brite pads or something of the sort. I'm sure if you PM'd him he'd tell you his tricks.

Then again, it'd probably be a whole lot easier to pull the internals out of your case and have the whole thing powdercoated. Easy cleanup and it the finish will probably outlast the car.

My opinion would be to gut the casing, clean it as suggested, and powder coat it.
