    Water and Oil Mixing How?

Ok Head was just checked shop reworked it and said it was good to begin with.

Block is a forged 89 CB what are the chances of it cracking to cause the water and oil mix. I have it pulled and will have the real answer in a couple days

Again with the turbo can it mix the water and oil without bellowing out smoke?

    Thanks, Chris

Re: Water and Oil Mixing How?

I've never heard of a turbo causing a water/oil mixing issue...ever. That's not to say it couldn't happen, but if it did, it would mean that the center section had cracked. The water going into the turbo stays in a water jacket completely separate from the oiled parts. No seals or anything to fail and cause it to leak.

X2... What he said. Turbo would have to be internally cracked and probably wouldn't be capable of making boost.

More likely the block is cracked or has a porosity issue. Electrolysis can be amazing in the damage it can accomplish.

Most likely a cracked block unless they didn't pressure test the head properly.

I had a cracked common block that caused this issue. I chased it for years.

Did a magnaflux find the crack? Thanks for all the info guys I'll report back Monday or Tuesday. If the block is supposedly ok. Then its time for a second opinion on both the head and block.

Re: Water and Oil Mixing How?

I had a head get checked once and they said it was ok(not a td). After installing it and getting it running, I started noticing antifreeze mixing in the oil. Pulled the oil cap and could see the coolant wicking up into the rocker area. It may have cracked after installing it, hard to tell.

You can't magnaflux aluminium. I sometimes hate finding stuff like that,

Re: Water and Oil Mixing How?

I have read of a turbo that cracked the jacket between the water and the oil cavity, but that was years ago on TD and I don't think there were any other guys chiming in having had the same problem. I would also guess the block, but I have heard of a turbo doing it.

Yes but you can have 2 stage penetrant dye non-destructive testing done on aluminum, and it will show cracks not readily evident to the eye. Standard testing on aircraft components and pipeline stuff.

The dye works very well. I have seen it done and you couldn't see the crack without it. Now, if harborfrieght would come out with the DIY version.......Hmmmmmm.
