Protecting valve seats etc while doing head work?

    Hi folks,

Well I'm tearing into a (non-mopar) head with a dremelalike, really just deseaming the ports, and I was planning to mask off the valve seats and bosses with hunks of tape to avoid scratching 'em up. Is there any better methods of doing stuff like that? I guess I could smear RTV on 'em or something, but that can be a PITA to get off again.

Ideas? (Apart from put down the tools and step away from the vehicle )

    thanks,

    RW222

    Do the valve job last????

You can mask stuff off but a dremel will tear thru it, been there, done that. Best is to do your porting THEN get a valve job.

Damn, don't make sense at me

I was kinda hoping to skip on the valve job, was just gonna lap 'em.

Good plan, but need to go in through the bottom for a couple of areas.

Tape really sucks, can't get any to stick. I'm just being realllll careful.

I'm having a hell of a time polishing the chambers. Can't seem to get rid of the pits, porous alloy??? I was hoping to get a mirror finish on them. I dunno if I can keep taking the surface off, my head volume will go up 10cc and I'll have 6:1 CR. I have a hard and clear anodisation process I wanted to do to the chambers, basically puts a thick gloss aluminum oxide coating on it, will reduce heat soak by factor of 10 and the "shiny" will cut it some more. It ain't gonna work too well on a pitted surface though. I just hope I can chemically clean into the pits enough for it to take.

Added to that I have 3 brands of paper, that all seem to do nothing but shed grit after 2 minutes, and a bunch of sanding disks that like to fly off the mandrel as soon as they catch an edge.

    Soooooo

I thought I must be doing something wrong in not being able to deal with the pitting... turns out all the home/small shop polished heads I'm finding pix of are about the same if you look real close at the pic and don't get too impressed by the flash shining off them. Only ones that have a real mirror finish are the spendy spendy heads with completely reworked chamber shape, built up then cut back.

yeah, tape wont really work. Maybe you could put a putty on there that wont harden (silly putty). Dremel wont go through that unless you are very persistent lol
