    1986 scan tool?

Been talking to Cindy about some plans I've got in the works. One of the things she mentioned that could be helpful is a scan tool. I didn't even know these cars had that kind of capability.

I'm guessing there must be a plug under the hood for the connection. I know there is a plug near all of the vacuum solenoids on pass side. Is that it?

And where would someone find a scan tool for an '86?

Yep, the connector is in the vicinity of the solenoids.

    Looks like this:

You can buy a scanner for cheap off eBay. Search for "OTC 2000", "OTC 4000e" and "OTC 4000
Enchanced". Look for a Pathfinder II or Pathfinder III cartridge to be included, or you'll have to buy one separately (which still won't cost you much).

+1 to that! Try to get a 4000 as it will give you more lines of info, which can be very handy. If you do a search there is info on this site to show you how to data log off the OTC onto your laptop, that will be very handy for diagnosing and tuning. Just my $02 again!

    Sweet! Thanks.

Does the 4000e also have a data logging function?

I'll have to see if I can get an old laptop around here up and running. We don't have anything with serial port that isn't over 8 years old!

The short answer is "yes", but, IIR the data logging is a function of the cartridge you have, at the moment I can't recall which one it is (Pathfinder III?) I haven't had one of my TMs up long enough to merit taking the time to get it going, plus I don't have a laptop (yet).

That would be a great one to get, especially if he has some OBDII cars, though not the newest. But, he can likely pick up a 4000 for a few hundred (less?) and get the job done, and you can get a basic OBDII scanner/code eraser from Harbor Freight for less than $50.00. But if a good ebay buy comes up on one of those "bricks" I'd have to snag it! But that's just me...
