'85 Omni GLH Multi-purpose race car

Number one: I WILL NOT PART THIS OUT.
Number two: THIS IS AN UNFINISHED, SEMI-STREET-LEGAL RACE CAR, NOT A RESTORABLE PROJECT

    '85 Omni GLH-T
    7-point roll cage
    Koni coil-over suspension
Rear disc brakes with vented rotors
    seam-welded and gusseted K-frame
Rear axle has extra bracing welded in
    12-gallon plastic fuel cell
Some interior sheet metal has been removed for weight reduction
    Custom-built rear strut tower brace
Belt-line body seam has been filled
Gas door, right-side mirror, rear side-marker lights, antenna mount, and right door lock have all been shaved
    H4 replaceable bulb headlights
Rear bumper shaved, all seams filled (needs finishing)
Front bumper moved in 3 inches. (total: nine inches shorter than stock)

A-523 5-speed trans with shortened shifter and 3.77:1 final drive
    T2/T3 hybrid clutch

CB T-2 bottom end with Venolia forged pistons (standard bore, machined for press-fit pins)
less than 2K miles on rebuild
    Forward Motion Inforcer 2 turbo (50-trim B-wheel, .63 A/R stage 3 turbine)
    FM 475 slider cam
    Fidanza adjustable cam pulley
52mm Throttle body with port-matched intake neck
custom pass-through fuel rail with integral pressure gauge

Car is wired for SMEC, currently has '89 T-II computer
Custom ground wiring, battery moved to passenger side
Battery is a DieHard Gold garden tractor battery, 335CCA, less than a month old
    Ractive Fuel/Air meter
    Faze Boost gauge (indiglo-style)
    Autometer fule gauge
2.5" downpipe into 3"pipe all the way back.

Raucously loud, and fast as hell, even without an intercooler.
Currently winds up to 15psi, through 1st, 2nd, and 3rd without hitting boost cut-out. Can probably handle 20-25, with an IC.

Ground effects are complete, but not attached. has 16" PT cruiser wheels with Goodyear Eagle GS-D3 205/55-16s. Correct yellow speed sensor gear, so speedometer does read correctly. Have the blue gear for factory tire size. Tires are 6 years old, but only have 20K miles on them.
Brand new headlight bulbs, Alternator/Water pump belt, windshield wipers

    The bad:
Interior consists of a dashboard (with holes in it), Omni passenger seat (driver's side) Spirit Passenger seat (pass side), floor mats. Every thing else is gone.
Aside from the factory cluster, only the boost gauge works properly, except there is no light. (I can't find the transformer for it)
The dashboard wiring is an insane mess.
When the fuel gauge works, it says the tank is over-full, no matter how much fuel is in it. (currently, about 5 gallons)
There is some rust in the front wheel wells, along the seams of the strut tower. Haven't had the time to fix it, but it isn't bad. Car is easy to take apart, should you need to fix it.
There was some rust on the passenger floorboard which has been removed, but not repaired. I have sheet metal available for it.
This car cannot be returned to stock. There has been way too much sheet metal work to put back. The rear doors have no internal bracing, so there are no handles inside to open them, and no linkage to install locking mechanisms, aside from what is on the latch. There is also no glass om them, rear door windows are currently Lexan.
Parking brake is AWOL. I have a handle, and that is it.

This is a race car. Pure and simple. If you don't want a race car, look elsewhere.
But it is expensive. $4000 or acceptable offer.
I have driven this car less than five miles since I put it together.
I need some money, but not badly. I spent way more than I intended to putting this together.

I should also mention that I am willing to do a partial trade for a 2-door L-body (Dodge, Plymouth, rampage, carb or turbo) or an '88-'89 H-body.

I like this Omni, but I want something I can drive regularly.

That glh looks like it should have been in the movie "Death Proof"! All it needs is the skull and cross bones on the hood.

    Very cool car!

Re: '85 Omni GLH Multi-purpose race car

Took the Omni on a road trip this weekend. 200+ miles, so far, and averaging 26mpg. But I think I overfilled the tank this time, so it could be more.

Unfortunately, the right front bumper end came loose and ate a groove in one of the Goodyear tires. It is toast, so I'm running on the spare. I will mark down the price accordingly. They cost about $170 each, plus installation. I can't afford to get a new one right now.

I also got a warning for loud exhaust... while I was off-throttle on the freeway. I said it's loud!

Is this Russ Jerome's old car?

Yes, but changes a bit as noted in the description.

Re: '85 Omni GLH Multi-purpose race car

So now I need to tell the story...

This was the Hybrid-powered Omni that Russ Jerome built and brought to SDAC-15, where it won it's class in the car show, and eventually ran a 12.0 sec 1/4 @ 120 mph.

A few years ago, he sold it to Raymont, who drove it around for a while before deciding to do some bodywork, much of which was done when a flood destroyed the interior. The interior was out of the car, in storage, when the building flooded. The car was not involved.
After that, he gave up on the project, and eventually sold it to me, without a transmission, turbo, intercooler, grille, wheels, ground effects, rear window, or interior.

I finished the bodywork Raymont started, then some more bodywork, then I took it apart and welded the broken parts of the frame back together.
I initially just wanted the hybrid engine for another project, and wound up with the car in the process. Since I didn't have a good turbo lying around, I stripped apart another car I had lying around for the parts I needed to put this one back together.
I converted the Omni back to a 5-speed, installed the above drivetrain, swapped Russ's 3-gallon drag racing tank for the 12-gallon fuel cell, moved some stuff around to even weight distribution, and put the car back together, as you can see.

So, this is NOT Russ Jerome's Omni anymore. But if someone wants a Russ-built hybrid 2.2L engine, I can probably make a deal, so long as I get to keep this car....

On a side note, the rest of my road trip (another 200+ miles) went off without a hitch, except for finding out that the boost limiter does, in fact, work. I had to fill up the fuel tank, carry around a bunch of tools and a passenger to weigh down the car enough to activate it in 3rd gear.

Re: '85 Omni GLH Multi-purpose race car

Will it help any if I lower the price to $3500 and throw in a set of +20% injectors, a 3-BAR MAP sensor and choice of a socketed or S60 computer?
