how can you tell? (forged or not)

im in the process of redoing my whole engine. The engine is suppose to a 89 common block engine but im not really sure when i got it threw the local part store. For sure it is a common block from an 89. I do have a rod out but i cant tell if it forged or not, and that goes for the crank as well. How do you tell?

thedodgegarage.com has the P/N's for all the rods, and I think even the cranks. You can check your P/N's against that to see if they are the forged parts or not...

Forged cranks are nice and smooth on the counterbalance aren't they?

    Shiny forged, dull cast.
    Machined forged, cast...cast is cast!

Rods are rods, there all the bigger 690+gram rods on common blocks
unless they are NA rods, they are realy skinny and much lighter.

look at the seam along the counter weights, thin little seam is cast, big wide seam is forged. Also counterbalances are smoother as you can see in Russ' pic.
