EDIT: There have been many reports of new vehicles losing cats around here, I can see how those are expensive cuz they are new, not some worn out 20 y/o junk.

It doenst matter how old they are, the materials inside remain the same. I actually just sold my non running 1991 grand prix for 400 bucks, only because it still had the factory cat on it.

Not consumed it just changes into a different chemical compound.

That would be consumed....

Point being, it takes a lot to use up the platinum which is what they try to to salvage, but it can be "used up" or even get shot out the tail pipe in chunks. OEM cats have a much higher content.
