    Wheel bearing race removal

I want to buy a tool to remove rear wheel bearing races since I have a difficult time with hammer and screw driver

The cone diameter are 2.1 inch and 2.28 and I'm not sure the hub clearance...

Are there such a tool? I look on ebay and they have these. Will they work?

    Thanks.

those are installation tools, they wont help much to remove the races. You need an inside bearing puller, like this:

ORRRRRRR the easiest way to do it, IF you have access to a welder: Run a bead on the inside of the race, then turn the part over and the race will fall out. When you do this, the race shrinks as the weld cools, and it will literally just fall out of the bore.

I only use a brass punch or drift to remove and install the bearing races. Since the brass is softer than the hub, it won't damage anything.

That works if you can get at it.

There are kits available, some use inside pullers-like Clay posted, some use other means, but I like the welding one, that could have saved me a ton of time,

I see what you guys are talking about. I was refering to rear hubs. Look at a Hub Tamer. Use the large bolt idea they do. Make some pieces that allow you to press out or press in a bearing. You can use it with or with out air tools and it works good. That is how we did them at Hyundai.

    Huh?

If you need races removed, machine shops, car dealers all have the right tools or take it somewhere and get them to tack weld it so the races fall out like suggested. I have to try that one.

I know this is an old thread, but just wanted to mention that the weld bead tip is awesome. I was fighting with a set of races in a rear hub... nothing worked including the gas grill. Put a mig bead on and they tapped right out. Awesome trick.

If you put a map gas torch on them and let it sit for a few minutes, they'll fall right out on the floor if you have it upside down.
