cause for cap popping off at end of cam?

Got home today to find oil coming on the floor of garage, did quick check of engine bay and found that the cap on the head at the end of the cam had come off. was hoping somebody would know a cause for this and what kept it there in the 1st place. still learning how to do repairs myself, so if this is a stupid question sorry.. thanks!

Usual cause is old brittle rubber or excessive blow-by by caused faulty PCV system, cracked pistons, or worn out piston rings.

Clean the oil off the head with brake cleaner and pop the new cam cap in. Check the PCV system and make sure it's working. Compression test make sure your piston/rings are in good shape.

What he said, plus use some ANEROBIC Sealer to help install it, it will let the plug slide in place then harden. DO NOT use RTV.

This has happened to me 2 times. One time after rearranging my PCV (doh!) and building up to much pressure under the valve cover.

Happen to me twice, used ana-something sealer than made an alum retainer for both ends.

forget fancy sealer. use a block of wood between the cap and the throttle cable bracket on a 1pc intake car.
