Speedometer works - Odometer does not!

Sorry not sure what forum this should go into:

My speedometer still works fine but on my first drive today (was in storage) I noticed my odometer and trip odometer have stopped working.

Is there a cable or anything like that that could have come off? I thought it should run off of the speedometer cable?

They do run off the speedometer, at least until the little gear that turns them breaks. Incredibly common on G/J bodies. I have half a dozen '87-'89 gauge clusters on the shelf and not a single one of them has a functional odometer.

Replacements can be found here: http://www.odometergears.com/chrysler.html

BTW, '87-up Daytonas and Lebarons used an electric speedometer, so if you're referring to the car in your avatar there is no cable.

How simple/difficult is this to do, is it a do-it-yourself type thing, or not? Is the trip odometer tied together with the odometer itself? I have the same problem with my 90 Lebaron GTC, but it's only been driven about 4K in the last 10 years....just noticed it last Summer....

I've never actually done it myself, my '88 got wrecked before I got around to it. The cluster in my '86 was replaced as a whole from a very low mileage wreck, and seems to be holding up so far.

Thanks for the link...I've seen that site before and can't believe how much that little gear costs. The turbo dodge side of me is just to cheap to get it.

Thanks, yes its a 90' Daytona - so that means it does not have a speedometer cable? I didn't know that.

I did some searching and saw the gears (there is two that should be replaced?)

I also saw that someone mentioned the speed sensor? Could this be a possible issue as well?

Nope, the speed sensor is what sends the signal that makes the speedometer work, and then the trip and odometers are still mechanically run by the speedometer. So if the speedo still works, then your speed sensor is fine.

FWIW in the non cable odometers its usually the blue gear in the gauge itself.
The grease gets old and sticky and seizes the gear then the stepper motor breaks teeth off of it.
I got an entire replacement cluster for 20 bucks at ebay...
**odo had 25k on it and was said to be working and it does.

Yeah, hit or miss on used clusters. My last e-bay cluster the gear fell apart when i touched it.
