Yanking my engine apart and I don't have a puller for it. Thought I would ask on here what everbody else used before I just go out and buy something to try.

Once I was able to change one using a steering wheel puller, some bent bolts, a little swearing and a 15mm wrench, but that was the only time that worked (in the pits of the drag strip at SDAC-10). I do this enough that is worth getting the OTC tool meant for pulling the sprocket, it works great!
However, I have seen some homemade ones that work well also and don't cost as much.

Here's what I did.
Got a junkyard crank pulley.
Weld a big nut in the center. Make sure you have a bolt to go with that nut.
Get a set of five longer bolt of threading into crank gear.
Then just tighten all give bolts, then tighten the center bolt to force the gear out. Remember to loose the crank gear bolt before hand so the gear have space to move out.
how to put back on???????
what do you use?
deuce
Just put the crank gear back on and tighten the bolt.
put some oil on it before you put it back on.
was a 2hour job to remove mine without the special tool...
put a spare belt pulley on it and with the help of a steering wheel puller + a good hammer it came off.
have to remove it again this week
Who sales the special puller and how much is it?
You want Miller C-4685-C, it comes with the puller and installer. Do a search for SPX/Miller, I bought one directly from them years ago. You'll pee your pants the first time you use it- the sprocket comes off so easy!
I've seen similar tools in OTC and Mac catalogs, so there're other vendors out there.

Just get another crank belt pulley from another motor, bolt it up to the crank sprocket leaving the middle bolt out. Then install a long bolt in the center hole so it sits about 2-3" off the face of the sprocket. Then you can just use a standard 3-jaw puller. Takes maybe 3-4 minutes max. The sprocket literally just slides off when you do it that way. Spare sprocket=free, 3-jaw puller is like $10 at harbor freight or autozone, or rent it for free at autozone.
Thats sounds pretty good. I don't have a spare pully but I bet the junkyard nearby would give me one for less then $5.
Yeah I'm sure you can get them cheap. I only say to use a spare one, because sometimes they'll get stuck a little at the beginning and the puller will warp the pulley. Sometimes the slide right off though.Originally Posted by Darkwolf
i just love my otc puller . i also work on cars for a living so i have bought alot of worthless tools. like a timing wrench for a ht4100 caddy 15mm pos. only thing it fits. so the puller that i,ve use 10 times or less is a good thing. but i will still use this tool. for year to come i hope. AL
Altered's way worked like a charm. Didn't even mess up my pully.
welded a special tool today to get the crank pulley off...
10minutes and the pulley was off, easy as pie
Sweet, glad it worked. Like I said sometimes they pop right off, but sometimes they get stubborn and bend the pulley a little, nothing an impact gun cant take care ofOriginally Posted by Darkwolf
