    more questions reguarding 2.2 & 2.5

Is the crank rods and pistons in an 86 2.2 turbo considered to have strong or weak internals. How much boost can I safely appyly ? This is a common block engine, right ?

Also, would a 2.5 make more or less power with the larger garret turbo than the stock mitsubishi ?

86 block is pre-common, not a common block
86 turbo internals have the LW rods cast crank and press fit pin Mahle pistons.

All the cars make more power with the Garret.

    Thanks for the quick response.

will the longer spool up time of the garrett lessen some of the torque off the line to help wih wheel spin ?

To some degree. There is minimal delay in a garret spool time compared to the mitsu with the 2.5L

    86 = weak rods.

most say the early blocks are good to 250ish whp from what ive heard.

86 style blocks are the "common" blocks to find

89+ are "common blocks" due to being used universally on 4 cylinders.

Does this apply to the tall block too? I've got one and was thinking of building a 2.2 LR with it. I'm shooting for the 400 whp mark, would that be pushing my luck?

Not sure what the webbing on the "tall" block is. I've seen both early and CB blocks make 400 whp.

So you think it would be okay then? I'd think that with the longer rods it would help to reduce stresses inside the motor.

Joe O'conner has been 370 to the wheels for a few years now on an 88 2.2 TII block. No matter what, anything can go wrong with any block..

It's a judgement call either way.

As Ken said, depends. Just make sure to have all the mains check for being square and round, use ARP studs on the mains and head and of course, ARP rod bolts.
I too was thinking of doing a long rod engine but have to stop spending money on my van,

Gotcha. I was planning on doing all that anyway too so I think I may give it a go. I was thinking about doing it as a 2.5L with 2.2 pistons though so I can still get the benefits of going to the longer rod while still maintaining the larger displacement. I'm sure that'll help my heavy Daytona get motivated a bit better than a 2.2.

I've got a lot of research ahead of me, if you're interested I can share what I find.

    Agreed.

I was considering using 2.2 pistons with my 2.5 crank but putting the piston side by side, the 2.2's stick up like 1/4 inch,
Was trying to avoid buying new pistons when I do my TIII hybrid. Machining off 1/4 inch will weaken the piston too much and will have the top ring a hair below the crown-can you say top ring melt,

I wasn't even considering that. I'd been planning on getting custom rods anyway since it'll be a tall block so I can have them made to whatever dimension I need. Perhaps that could be another variable to consider? Custom rods aren't much more than a quality set of forged anyway.

use 2.5 pistons on a 2.2 crank but get longer rods made.... that would make an interesting combo
