    Weird (randomly occuring) Starting Issue

So, this has happened to me twice now.

I go out to start my car, I stick the key in the ignition, turn, the fuel pump and dash lights come to life, I turn the key and *CLICK*.

The first time it happened when I was at a shopping center. I ended up pushing it out into the middle of the parking lot and trying to push start it. It didn't start, but I think all the shuddering jarred something loose and it started after that.

Second time was yesterday morning, and same deal. Ended up trying to push start, started after it shuddered, trying to come to life.

Now, as an aside, while I was pushing it (in 4th gear), everytime the engine would turn over, the fuel pump would buzz like the key was just put in. Not sure if it's supposed to do that, or part of the issue.

The two times it happened were about 2 months apart.

Any ideas? Bad starter? Power module? Ground? Sigh.

    Check the ground straps.

Sounds like it could be an intermittent ground. Does the dash die when you try to crank it? If so, it could be a battery terminal. Could also be an intermittent power feed.

Battery Terminals are great, dash doesn't die. The grounds actually are pretty good...I've replaced the straps with 4 gauge wire and use dielectric grease on the contact points.

I'll check em again, though...you never know.

time to have someone wiggle wires while you have the key in start position. (both sides of injector harness plug, hep wires, tap starter relay and unplug/replug) Don't forget the ground wire attached to the top of the transmission (brown?).
Minimop mentions two spade connectors in harness between batt and fender. I had one car where they were eaten up by battery acid.
Tip from electrical whiz at my mechanics. Ohmeters will only show failed connections not failing connections. A test light with show more bad connections.

The fact that it won't push start means there is an intermittent somewhere. You hear the fuel pump, so the electronics are getting power at least. Is your front engine harness properly supported? With the engine running, try shaking the harness to see if it will stumble.

Front engine harness, eh? I'll give it a shot!

I can't remember if there a relay for the starter or does the ignition wire just go to the starter. If there is a relay you might want to check it out.
