    1987 Lebaron turbo

    Hey all,

Started working on the baron last night. Trying to get rid of the mess of vac lines and the high idle and stalling issues.

I took out the canister and it's vac lines and made sure all the others were good and had good connections. It's my first time working on a log so I'm not up to par with it.

I'm thinking the timing is way out because the distributor is turned a bit to the left, when I've always seen them turned a good ways to the right. There is also a lot of unburned gas coming out. It still has the cat, a resonator and muffler on it. Will probably take most of those off tonight.

On these older cars I see basically these distribution things for the heater core hoses, what is that thing?

Only code is 31. For some reason, even at -15 and the engine bone cold, the fan was turning on?!

Anyway, any tuning tips for the log cars would be great.

The heater contol valve. vac line opens and closes it.

Probably the ac button is pressed in?

I will check that. It was going on and off, not sure if playing with distributor was doing it.

On and off could be the ac switch on and low ac pressure?

There are about 11 vac lines on a log motor, only *2* are needed to run the car.

    Mani to MAP.

    Mani to FPR.

Add lines for G valve and boost guage.

Now, throw all the others away.

All lines to the TB are emissions and can be capped off.
( but not the brake booster!! )

High idle / stalling sounds like an AIS issue....

Having a hard time finding ais's as junk here. Thinks its running a bit better now but it still hits a wall at 3300. Could be cam timing but it sounds like it's just missing and sputtering too much at that range to go any faster. Cam timing usually makes it feel like it still has juice but not enough air.

Check plugs, checked gap, changed fuel filter, cleaned tb, changed wires (all but coil wire). Could problem lie in coil or coil wire?

Did the AIS squeal on your log?
mine does when you turn the key on.

I just finished pulling the head off of mine tonight, that's an experience i don't care to repeat anytime soon. i even managed to break most of my hard vac lines, glad to hear that i only really need 2

when you are adjusting the ign. timing it will come on when the coolant temp sensor is unplugged.

Mine was coming on with the coolant sensor plugged in. Anyone have any insight to the debilitating misfire and sputter just over 3 grand? I was just now thinking limp mode but no codes are being thrown. Maybe time to reset the codes and start it up, drive it and see if new codes come up.

    Re: 1987 Lebaron turbo

Update: Still no codes. Tried new wires, no go. Tried new hep, no go. Tried new coil, worked until for one drive only misfiring at about 4700+. We then hooked up the wastegate arm, thinking we were good to go, went for a drive, sputtering down at 3300 again. Tried a different coil, same thing. Still no codes.

My question is, what will make an engine sputter at a given rpm. Is it bad gas, too rich, too lean, bad timing? We can get it to go past were it starts sputtering, by going lighter on the throttle and slowly passing the sputter mark. No boost or A/F gauge in this car.

    Please help.

First, confirm the cam timing. Then you need to set the distributer timing. Also take a look at the cam lobes if you have the valve cover off, they are usually worn down a fair amount on higher mileage slider cam cars.

+1 on that. i've got to replace the cam on my '86 because it's starting to get some serious ridges on the edges of the lobes.
i thought Chebby was the only ones that had problems with soft cams?

Changed the computer on the lebaron this weekend and still no change in rpm revving. May try another fuel filter on there since the last one we changed out was dirty as all hell.
