They might be a tad short. Almost right, about equal amounts under and over (1.5% IIRC) are 215/60s and 215/65s and just right diameter wise but at risk of a full lock rub are 225/60s.
The Neons have less offset so there closer to the strut, I would bet that 205's are the biggest that will fit without rubbing. You will need spacers to run wider tires.
On stock wheels, I ran 215/60's and 215/65's. The 16's I run now are 225's,

225-50 on 15 x 6.5" Crab wheels
205/60R15 and 225/50R15 are car sizes, and it will rev higher on the highway, especially with an auto.
On the stock Lace 15x6" wheels my(now sold) Voyager LX has, I ran 225/60R15 BFGoodrich Traction T/A V-rated tires.
50 series 15's are too short for an auto. I ran 65's on 15's to drop the rpm and now run 225/55R16's,

I run a 205/50r15 on the omni, and a 205/60r15 on the shadow, and 600. our omni has the stock 185/65r14s on there. I would think that anything over a 205/50r15 would be pushing it on an omni. I know for a fact that a 215/60r15 won't even come close to fitting from when a total idiot tried to order the wrong size tires over the net and demanded that we try to put them on. When that did not work he came back to try the same thing with a Jeep before we promptly sent him packing.
Running 225/60/15s on 6.5in wide crabs up front and have 195/60/15s on the back. The 195s look kinda goofy small but they came free with the rims and were almost brand new.
205-60-15 and they look like doo doo.
Stupid tire shop. My work van (V6 Caravan) was originally a 14" wheel van. I put a nice set of Wagons on it. Took it to Tires Plus, they crossed the 14" tire to a comparable size 15" tire. We argued about it, but they were adamant about a larger tire rubbing. I went ahead and got the 205-60's and they look like crap and ride like crap.

Like everything there's a sweet spot. Too high an aspect ratio and you've got no lateral traction, too low a ratio, and you've got no longitudonal traction. Well relatively speaking, on the one hand the contact patch is long and thin and the other it is short and wide. With too rigid a low aspect ratio tire one can also have issues on real roads wherein a small lump of gravel will completely lift the tread off the road, rather than deflecting around it somewhat.

225/60-15s are almost the same height as a 205/70-15
hum don't you mean 205/70-14? which is what all the tire shops wanna put on the stock steelies on our vans, when stock tires are theoretically 195/75R14
205/70/14 is the stock size for my van according to the window sticker. I run a 215/55/16 now.
