What? I've never heard of one that connects like that. Are you sure your not getting mixed up with the A/C compressor. That has a plug with those color wires I think. If your JYing one just get one that matches the connections and if your buying a new one then give them the correct vehicle info and check the one the give you.

plug-in field wires for an '85 omni? thats not original, i could see someone modifying the original wires i suppose.

bring your old one to the store and have them inspect it and make a recommendation because something doesnt sound kosher for an 85 omni.

Sounds more like a neon or newer caravan alternator. I believe the newer caravan alt will actually bolt in physically. They had a plug for the field wires...

Take a look for any markings on it. Is it a nippondenso, mitsubishi, etc. Often you can figure it out from that and autozone/partsamerica/rockauto's webpage.

If you have a JY near you, you could probably grab a new front harness if there's another l-body in the yard. Or something else if it will work, just be a little long, but sometimes that's a good thing.

Re: need to identify my omni alternator!!!!!!!!! PLEASE HELP!!!

Even the Nippondenso alternators used on the newer turbo cars still have four wires that attch to studs, no plugs.

From the sounds of the description it might be a neon alternator or something off a newer Mopar. Are you in touch with the former owner of the car? Maybe he can tell you where he got it from?

Another thing to keep in mind is that on a 2.0 or 2.4 the alternator is hard mounted to the brackets and engine block, so it grouds through them. On the 2.2 cars the alternator is mounted with rubber bushings so it's going to need some sort of ground from the case to the block to work properly.

wow this car is such a pile of ---- when the alternator went out it ruinded the battery the voltage regulator alternator and it toasted a fuse-able link, i havent been so pissed in my life i fixed all those problems then the fan stopped working then i fixed that and then it started to over charge at ~18amps i took it for a ride and they went down to normal, i cant wait for this car to be gone.

If the voltage spikes really high like that again go over your field terminal wires really well to make sure there is no stripped insulation exposing the wire. I had that happen to my GLHT this past summer and it blew out the headlights in the middle of now where. I had to drive home with only the driving lights.

The only thing I can think of is that there is some missing insulation on the field terminal wires and it is contacting the shift lever when you push in the clutch which pulls that lever on the trans upwards.
