    Cracked head...ARRR!

Just pulled the engine apart during my resto and came to the unfortunate realization that my head is cracked. I'm thinking about buying a 2.2 Laser first gen parts car....will that head work?

From the other thread, we'll move this over here.

Between the valves is very common. As long as it isn't into the water jackets your fine. But if you need another head, they are cheap and plentiful.

A friend I've just spoken with, a TD enthusiast, says our yards only have TD's with busted heads. Doggone!

I find it hard to believe that they ALL have bad heads. They WILL crack between valves, but if the cracks don't go all the way to the water jacket then your fine. If the head pressure tests OK then use it. All of mine have cracks in at least one chamber.

how about posting some pictures of the cracks in the head. You never know, they may not be that bad after you let others see what you have.

We're all a bunch of crackheads around here. Cracks between the valves are common, it's hard to find a head without them. Cracks from crossdrilled coolant passages to the water jacket are also common and nothing to worry about.

Cracks from the combustion chamber to the coolant passages are the ones that I would be concerned with.

200 for a reman head isn't bad, i will usually spend that much just getting a stock head redone at the machine shop. chances are even if you get one from a junkyard it may still need to be checked, resurfaced and may need valve work and new seals at least.

An 86 Laser will have a swirl head like you have, but it will not be cross drilled and you will need to swap the cam. Like Xtrem said, 84-85 Lasers use G heads.

    I'm with Simon.

Beautiful bolt it on and go head, just make sure it has turbo valves.
