pics of my freak block. They do exist!

I pulled my freak motor out of my beater I junked a week or so ago. Thought you guys might like to see this pretty rare block. I know Gary D. had one of these blocks, but have never seen or heard of another one. This is not a tall deck block. This was a warranty replacement long block for a early TII car (pre-C/B). Early steel crank, 4 bolt crank pulley, early style 5 quart oil pan, TII-TIV rods, cast pistons. These pics are of the front and rear of the same block. Check out the 93 casting date with a fuel pump cutout? Mexican casting. Going to re-freshen while it's out, so more pics to come.

I should check the pre-CB Turbo II shortblock I was just talking about rebuilding in my last PM to you. According to the guy I bought it from, it came from an auction held by Mopar Performance and was used in R&D. Got it back in '99 from Dave Grove. I've never checked the date on the back though. The EIN stamped on the block was really different and could not have been from some production car as far as I can tell.

I read these were warranty bocks with all the CB goodies inside, and old stuff outside.

I meant "freaky" in a good way Here is a pic of a real freak. Not tall deck but casting # suggests it is. CB webbing, 4 bolt caps, 3.495" bores! It "thinks" it's a common block but has fuel pump cutout. I built this motor at least 5 years ago for a friend of mine. Bought the block from the late great Dave Grove. We still remember you bud!

That's the million dollar question Rob. Where did this block come from? The new block came from Dave Grove who got the block from a circle track guy that raced in the Louisville, KY area after he quit racing. My understanding is he was sponsored or was supplied parts from Chrysler. That block was never available from the factory to the general public. Looks just like a TD block but had a 9.360" deck height. Dave told me he had many of these blocks! They were prepped for the 4 bolt main caps and bored and then stored with cosmoline. With that overbore they were right at the 2.3 ltr. limit for that class racing.
The caps were on the block, but had to be fully prepped. Needed line boring, honing, registering, hardware, finish machining, etc. The blocks were all tapped for the caps though and they were decked slightly to get pistons out of the hole a bit. Possibly came from Koffels, Arrow, who knows? There are a few freaky motors out there, that is for sure.

Yeah, its the same as mine I posted on a few weeks ago:
    http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=48432

Dean Stillie posted on the osdac site about mine as well, he had a few of them:
"I bought a couple of these in the early days of rampage racing . they were common block 2.2's with steel cranks and fuel pump block of plates for 895$ brand new short blocks. remember melting a piston in one then getting a new warranty short block then when the claim was paid getting my first motor out of the garbage and putting an mp mahle piston in for 53$ and using it in my 87 shelby z lol sweet deal"

Mine does in fact have a forged crank as well..but not 4 bolt mains

Re: pics of my freak block. They do exist!

Didn't see your post from a couple weeks ago. I posted pics of two different motors. The first set is just like yours, except mine has a 4 bolt crank pulley on it. Steel crank in mine too. Yep, block # 4501851 confirms it, you have a replacement block there. You definitely have a rare strong block on your hands.

The second motor (the one with the 4 bolt mains) is another freak block but not the same. That motor uses all the CB parts ie; crank, pan, oil seal retainer, etc. Looks to be tall deck block, but it's not. That makes it a freak in my book.
