Arrow If you think you have oil pressure gauge issues-read here!!!!

Guys, the stock gauge is notoriously inaccurate so before having a heart attack, buy a cheap mechanical guage and install it temporarilly so you can see what is going on, then you can panic or not. Another but not foolproof way to tell is if you have low oil pressure, the lifters should be noisey.

Oil pressure at idle should be around 10 psi or higher, and rule of thumb is 10 psi per 1000 rpm, 4 psi is the bare minimum and if your over 100 psi, the relief valve in the oil pump is stuck.

The electronic after market gauges are not reliable either. I have an autometer electric gauge in my SC that is about as accurate as the stock gauge; even after I sent it back to be recalibrated.

Yeah, my aftermarket gauge says I have 8 psi at warm idle. The engine isn't noisy, so I'm not too concerned.

Heh, I should probably stick a warning label in my minivan before letting anyone else drive it then, oil gauge has been reading zero for years, only twitches up just above minimum for 5 minutes this weather when it's cold. The idiot light seems to work fine.

You either have low oil or the balance shafts have been removed and the oil is sloshing away from the oil pump pickup, NOT good.

Only the 2.5 TBI's got balance shafts.

2.2 TBI's (and the 2.5's in the Dakota) came without them up until the end of their production in 94/95.

The 2.2 TBI's weren't used in much else besides L-bodies and Shadow/Sundance Americas in the later years, which is why you probably thought they were an L-body only thing.

Don't forget the easy stuff too. Make sure the contact on the sending unit is clean AND tight. If it isn't tight then it'll read low and jump around.

What year did they go with the 2-wire pickup? I'm still learning about the 4 bangers. My '86 has a 1 wire. It connects up like the temp pickup for the temp gauge. That's the one I'm talking about above and they can get dirty and loosen up. The 2-wire, well, then, that might be broke for sure if it doesn't work.

wow im seein some staggering numbers compared to my autometer mech gauge, my readings are 55 psi at idle and after fully warm im never below 20 psi at idle. Its new gauge too. do i have an issue or something? driving when full warmed up at highway speeds etc im around 55 psi.

My rebuilt engine had 5psi at hot idle, around 40 on the highway. Verified w/ a mechanical gauge. Never gave me any problems.
