SmoKen on decel 92 IROC R/t

Well, Looks like the car has bad valve seals. No smoke at Idle or accell. Downshift coming to a stop to hear the exhaust note and I get smoke. Engine Rebuilt 5k ago. I'll do a compresson test to check the ring seating. Head rebuilt as well.

Car went through 2 quarts in 5k miles. Valvetrain not my area of expertise. What is invloved in fixing this?

Ken, valve seals are not cheap for this engine so you want to make sure it's them before you go ripping them out.

Remember at SDAC my car was doing that? Everyone kept telling me my car was smoking, I had only a few hundred miles on a fresh engine at the time and I thought I might have to rip it back apart. Turned out to be the turbo.

    I agree on the turbo
glhs was doing the same thing
fine idling and under boost , smoked under decel
changed the low mileage head for a fresh head same thing
turned out the vac. in the exhaust stream was pulling the oil though the turbo

Had similar symptoms on an 8 valve GLHS, and after changing valve seals and messing with it for a week it ended up being the turbo.

Pull the plugs and look for signs of oil, also look in the bores with a pencil type light and look for clean spots on the pistons at 12 and 6 oclock. If pistons are completely black, then its valve seals/guide or turbo, if clean, rings.

I was going to say turbo as well. My VNT would do this sometimes on decel, and mostly on decel after it would boost some to alot. Excessive *thrust* play is what I found.

    Check your turbo, 1st.

if the turbo was bad, would there be large amounts of oil in the intercooler and piping as well?

Re: Smoke on decel 92 IROC R/t

Thanks... After getting under it this morning, Here is what I found...

#1 People need to ORIENT their hose clamps better. Had a coolant hese that theclamp was loose and IMPOSSIBLE to get to...

#2 These T3 turbo's are WEIRD... backing plate behind the turbine... Crusted with oil, leaking down the drainback tube... Hmmm looks like I found my leak as well. Sad thing is, this is a fresh rebuild... Nothing but new for me from now on

Thanks folks... Decided to look at swapping the turbo, on a TIII I've heard the turbo comes off easier than a TII without removing the head, any tips??

I don't think you can get a 'new' TIII turbocharger. If you are going to get new, I would suggest a Turbonetics T3/T4 hybrid. Although that will cost a lot considering you'll have to revamp your downpipe and wastegate setup.

Yes and no, if its just leaking out of the exhaust side, it will just get put into the exhaust and burned.

Its cake, just unbolt the lines, soak the nuts with penetrating oil and remove. I need short wrench for one bolt but my turbo sits back more than an R/T.

I would go with a nice Stage II, super 50 trim hybrid, and I don't believe FM is selling the elbow assembly anymore, so the DP will have to be redone. I would consider selling mine but I might need it for my R/T,

I missed the pat where you picked up an R/T. How long ago was that and what shape?

Ken, just inspect the original turbo before making any decisions.

I got the one locally, fastforwards 91 White Spirit R/T. It has bad paint peel but big whoop. Its missing the head, cams, rocker arms but everything else is there. Its lowered, adjustable panhard bar, short throw shifter, 2.5 inch mandrel bent cat back exhaust. Interior is mint, so I'll use my spare stuff to put it back together, keep it basically stock and it will be the wifes summer car and she want's to drag race it,

I'll keep it close to stock now but putting stage 1 cams in. Maybe later, bigger turbo etc.

I wonder if you can buy a new Buick turbo then swap the exh housing? That's where the Super 70 came from right? That was a nice street turbo before it went out on me.
